As it stands today, social work education falls short in providing critical theories and frameworks that reflect the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Such insufficiencies maintain racism and other forms of oppression that plague both social work pedagogy and praxis. To challenge and dismantle hegemonic curricula, social work education needs to do more to provide the knowledge and tools necessary for anti-racist social work. The purpose of this article is to present five critical theories and frameworks written by Indigenous and People of Color scholars that social work educators, researchers, and practitioners can integrate into their teaching and practice to raise the critical consciousness of social work students. These five postulations are Compa Love, Racial Triangulation Theory, Breath of Life Theory, kapwa, and cultural wealth. The article will also discuss implications for social work education and practice. Centering the voices of under-represented scholars whose epistemologies are rooted in the lived experiences and communities that the field of social work traverses provides a pathway for social work education and practice to be tailored towards self-determination for all.

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement re-centered and illuminated the disparities facing the Black population as a result of systemic racism in the United States (U.S.). Notably, BLM also highlighted and uplifted issues facing Black women. Numerous studies have demonstrated that Black women are at-risk for cardiovascular disease, maternal and infant mortality, breast cancer, and mental health symptoms. This paper seeks to argue that the BLM movement is a critical site for radical transformation for raising critical consciousness. In focusing on the well-being of Black people, BLM puts forth a framework of healing justice that employs an anti-racist, intersectional, holistic, and culturally and politically appropriate informed therapeutic approach. This framework addresses the historical and contemporary trauma that Black people have and continue to experience in the U.S. This paper asserts that this framework can cultivate a space of vulnerability for Black women to heal and to continue to develop resilience for liberation and self-determination.

Abstract
Few studies have explored the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) MSW students during the pandemic. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the experiences of BIPOC MSW students in a predominantly white institution in the Northeast during the pandemic and how it affected their mental health. Findings presented were drawn from 29 students who participated in online surveys and focus groups. About 69% of our sample experienced psychological distress, with higher proportions among those who identified as Latine/Latinx, womxn, straight, first-generation, full-time and part-time students, and clinical students. Qualitative findings highlighted three main themes: (1) the experiences and needs of white MSW students were prioritized, (2) inconsistencies in the response to the pandemic forced students to advocate for themselves in their classes and field placements, and (3) virtual learning provided a reprieve for students from experiencing racism that helped improve their perceived well-being. Findings indicate that MSW programs need to commit to acknowledging how systemic racism affects the learning experiences of BIPOC MSW students, work toward dismantling these oppressive structures, and allocate resources that center the health and well-being of BIPOC students and their lived experiences.

<p class="Pa7"><strong>Background: </strong>Filipino Americans have the highest risk for obesity-related type 2 dia­betes and related complications compared with all major Asian American subgroups. Identifying effective interventions to im­prove Filipino health outcomes are needed to reduce this health disparity.</p><p class="Pa7"><strong>Objective: </strong>To assess the acceptability and cultural relevance of the PilAm Go4Health program - a culturally adapted mobile health weight-loss lifestyle intervention in­cluding virtual social networking for Filipino Americans with type 2 diabetes.</p><p class="Pa7"><strong>Design, Setting, Participants: </strong>Qualitative semi-structured post-program interviews ex­plored perceptions of 45 Filipino Americans with type 2 diabetes in Northern California regarding their perceptions of the accept­ability and cultural relevance of PilAm Go­4Health. Participants' mean age was 57.6 years. Sixty-seven interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed by four independent coders.</p><p class="Pa7"><strong>Results: </strong>Over half (n=26, 57.8%) of the respondents found that a culturally tailored intervention program enhanced their engagement. All (n=45) of the respon­dents felt that mobile health technology promoted their self-efficacy. A majority of the respondents (n=29, 64.4%) expressed that they progressed from despair to self-efficacy as a result of their participation in the intervention. More than one-fourth of the participants (n=13, 28.8%) discussed that the intervention needed further cultural tailoring.</p><p class="Default"><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Overall, PilAm Go4Health — a mobile health weight-loss lifestyle in­tervention — was acceptable and culturally relevant for Filipino Americans with type 2 diabetes. Findings may help inform clinician and researchers on effective intervention strategies for diabetes self-management when designing interventions for diverse populations.</p><p class="Default"><em>Ethn Dis. </em>2017;27(2):143-154; doi:10.18865/ed.27.2.143.</p>

Abstract
Race, ethnicity, and racism (RER) are interconnected with the critical problems tackled in the Grand Challenges for Social Work (GCSW). Yet, the extent to which the GCSW discuss the central role of RER is less clear. This article investigates how the GCSW integrate RER in their discourse. Using content analysis, authors examined all 21 concept papers that comprise the 12 initial GCSW to determine their attention to RER. Authors assessed whether each paper made any reference to race or ethnicity, whether race or ethnicity was considered as a primary theme, and whether racism was mentioned. Nine GCSW had at least one paper that mentioned race or ethnicity; seven had at least one paper that treated race and ethnicity as a major construct. Five GCSW contained at least one paper that discussed racism's impacts on their topical interests. None of the papers analyzed in the study defined or specified their conceptualization of racism. The GCSW are strategically positioned to widen and deepen social work's focus on RER, and the recent adoption of the 13th GCSW to "Eliminate racism" is an important first step. Authors encourage the social work field to embrace a more explicit, renewed, and continued commitment to eradicating systemic racism.

Objective: To examine if reduced financial strain and higher educational attainment would confer less advantage for successful cessation among African Americans than for White individuals.Design: A secondary data analysis of the Quit2Live study, a smoking cessation inter­vention for individuals who smoke.Setting: Recruited participants from a met­ropolitan city in the Midwest.Participants: The sample included 224 African American and 225 White individuals who smoke.Methods: We implemented a logistic regression analysis and a two-way interac­tion of the combined financial strain and educational attainment variable and race on smoking abstinence.Main Outcome Measures: Our outcome variable was cotinine-verified smoking abstinence at the end-of-treatment (week 12). Our explanatory variables were a com­bination of financial strain (high, low) and educational attainment (high, low).Results: About 25% of the study partici­pants were low financial strain and high education, 41% high financial strain and high education, 23% high financial strain and low education, and 11% low financial strain and low education. A greater propor­tion of African Americans vs Whites were in the high financial strain/low educational attainment category (28% vs 18%, P = .01). Participants with high financial strain and low educational attainment had substantially lower odds of abstinence (OR = .29 [95% CI: .12, .68]) compared to participants with low financial strain and high educational attainment. Contrary to our hypothesis, race did not moderate this association.Conclusion: Findings highlight the con­straining role of high financial strain and low educational attainment, irrespective of race, on smoking abstinence among smok­ers actively engaged in a quit attempt.Ethn Dis. 2022;32(3):223-230; doi:10.18865/ed.32.3.223
