The 1990s witnessed the detection of a number of international political "scandals" that effectively reversed the traditional relationship between crime & social marginalization: crime became an operating mode of the powers that be. With its change of social status came a change of form & structure, & crime came to light where it had been hitherto invisible: in the upper echelons of political power. But this new visibility seems to reflect a recent shift in public opinion, which now refuses to tolerate the illegal methods employed by the modern State to monopolize legitimacy. That does not mean these methods are going under in a great wave of moralization, they are simply being taken up by new players, those who took over with globalization: the financial markets. Now the State is vying with the financial markets for the monopoly in legitimate illegality. Adapted from the source document.
