Entretien avec Robert Malley. Apres Arafat

The death of Yasser Arafat underscored divisions within the Palestinian Authority. The historic PLO leader had successfully maintained a minimum of cohesion among his people. He is no longer there to unify them & dissensions have been revealed. Although most of the factions seem ready to support Arafat's former prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinians are nevertheless in the midst of a serious political crisis. Political & religious groups, armed organizations & family clans are all jockeying for power in their respective fiefs. The Islamists of Hamas are extending their influence & the Palestinian Authority's institutional structures have been weakened considerably. What's more, the Israeli pullback from Gaza could damage unity in the nascent Palestinian state. Today, it looks like Gaza could take a different path than the West Bank. The months ahead will thus prove critical to the future of Palestine. Adapted from the source document.

(IP)
