This paper seeks to trace the developments which led the Church of Modena and its bishops to acquire a pre-eminent position in its diocese in the second half of the ninth century and for much of the following one. The analysis sets out from the highly fragmented post-Roman territorial context and from the efforts made by Lombard kings, which were mostly directed towards the fiscal estate of Cittanova, rather than the ancient Roman civitas of Mutina. Particular attention is paid to the figure of Bishop Leodoin and to the manuscripts attributed to him in the Chapter Library, especially the famous Codex legum (O.I.2), for which a different production context is suggested, prior to its acquisition by the Church of Modena.

Uno studio complessivo e di lunga durata dedicato agli Hucpoldingi, un oggetto di ricerca fino a oggi di difficile inquadramento per gli studiosi. Accostati al supposto governo comitale della città di Bologna dall'erudizione ottocentesca, gli Hucpoldingi sono rimasti per lungo tempo ai margini delle ricostruzioni di storia politica del regno italico altomedievale proprio per l'ampiezza d'azione che caratterizzò il gruppo parentale per più di due secoli, dal IX all'XI. La dispersione geografica dei fondi documentari che attestano la loro azione li ha resi inafferrabili a lungo, nel loro insieme. La ricerca affronta la ricostruzione delle vicende politiche dei diversi membri della parentela, del loro patrimonio e delle clientele loro connesse nei vari settori del regno. Esamina infine gli elementi peculiari del gruppo, dai quali emergono i caratteri del loro potere, le strategie di memoria e le nozioni di autoconspevolezza comuni ai diversi individui.

The relevance of Cherubino Ghirardacci's Historia di Bologna has been abundantly emphasized by Bolognese historiography. Nonetheless, its reception as a historiographical work has often been limited to consulting the large amount of documentation that the friar inserted to illustrate his narrative. With the aim of overcoming this limited perspective, the essay shows that the Historia has its own historiographical value, which is affected by the monastic formation of the author and the political and cultural context of its composition. It then focuses on the methods of work Ghirardacci adopted towards the Middle Ages of Bologna, through the examination of some focal points of the historical development of the early medieval city. What emerges is the profile of a historian who was much more than a simple compiler of documents. Ghirardacci wrote the Historia with the intention of magnifying the past of his city, opposing the freedom and autonomy of pre-communal times against the state of submission that Bologna suffered in his time by the papal dominion. ; La rilevanza dell'Historia di Bologna di Cherubino Ghirardacci è stata ampiamente sottolineata dalla storiografia bolognese. La sua ricezione come opera storiografica, tuttavia, è stata spesso limitata alla consultazione della grande quantità di documentazione che il frate inserì a completamento e illustrazione della sua ricostruzione storica. Con lo scopo di superare questa prospettiva limitata, il saggio mostra che l'Historia possiede una propria valenza storiografica che risente della formazione monastica dell'autore e del contesto politico e culturale in cui fu composta. Si sofferma poi sulle modalità di lavoro e di narrazione che Ghirardacci adottò nei confronti del medioevo bolognese, attraverso l'esame di alcuni punti focali dello sviluppo storico cittadino altomedievale. Ne emerge il profilo di uno storico che era ben altro che un semplice compilatore di documenti: Ghirardacci scrisse la Historia con l'intento di magnificare il passato della propria città, contrapponendo la libertà e l'autonomia dei tempi precomunali con lo stato di sottomissione che Bologna subiva ai suoi tempi da parte del dominio pontificio.

L'ente ricevette dal re longobardo e dai successori carolingi di diversi complessi fiscali con lo scopo di sottrarli al controllo ordinario degli ufficiali del regno, riservandoli alla propria disponibilità diretta. Dopo l'875, si affievolì il rapporto diretto tra abbazia e potere centrale, Nonantola e il suo cospicuo patrimonio di beni fiscali divennero così ambita preda di alcune delle figure vescovili più eminenti. Il saggio indaga la competizione politica giocata tra i re carolingi, i vescovi italici e l'abate Teodorico, che mirava all'autonomia politica e patrimoniale della propria abbazia. / ENGLISH: The foundation of Nonantola abbey in 752 by Duke Anselm with King Aistulf's endorsementmarked the shape of eastern Emilia profoundly. After 875, the close relationship between the abbey and the political power at court weakened, Nonantola and its considerable patrimony of fiscal resources became the prey of some of the most eminent episcopal figures of the Kingdom. A comprehensive and long-lasting study dedicated to the Hucpoldingi, an object of research so far difficult to classify for scholars. Combined with the supposed comital government of the city of Bologna from the nineteenth-century erudition, the Hucpoldingi remained for a long time on the margins of the reconstructions of political history of the early medieval Italic kingdom precisely because of the amplitude of action that characterized the parental group for more than two centuries , from IX to XI. The geographical dispersion of the documentary funds that attest their action has made them elusive for a long time, as a whole. The research deals with the reconstruction of the political events of the different members of the kinship, of their heritage and of the clientele connected to them in the various sectors of the kingdom. Finally, it examines the peculiar elements of the group, from which the characteristics of their power emerge, the memory strategies and the notions of self-awareness common to different individuals.
