The tendency for postmodern & post-Marxist theorists to misrepresent architecture's influence on contemporary society is examined. Informed by F. Jameson's (1985) critique of modernism's inclination to conflate the political & the aesthetic, it is claimed that these theoretical perspectives have erroneously conflated architecture & social & political processes of identity creation. Three specific problems with postmodern & post-Marxist approaches to architecture are subsequently identified: (1) breaking the distinction between processes of form making & meaning making; (2) the placement of social critique within architectural critique; & (3) the emergence of political radicalism within the academic community has prompted the replacement of social action by social change within social movements.
