Arab Gulf states: end of the status quo?

After making some general remarks about Islam and the West and Sunni and Shia Islam, the author suggests some points about political developments in the Arab Gulf states and their future. The extreme ambiguities in the Arab and Muslim attitudes towards the West are illuminated. A number of factors which favour the future stability of the Gulf region are discussed. (DÜI-Sen)

After briefly describing the geographical factors which have shaped the history and social development of the region, the author narrates the history of "Greater Syria" since 3.500 B.C. with particular reference to the province of Syria in the Ottoman Empire, Arab revolt during the First World War, Trans-Jordan as an independent empire under British protection, French administration in Syria, its gaining independence after the Second World War and political developments in Syria between 1945 and 1984. Political development in Jordan since 1948 and its relations with Syria during the last 20 years. (DÜI-Sen)
