Cet article étudie la littérature sur le bien-fondé du lien entre les modèles à base d'agents artificiels et l'individualisme méthodologique. L'argument défendu est que ces analyses reposent sur une définition spécifique de l'individualisme méthodologique rendant ainsi les conclusions dépendantes de la définition retenue. L'article propose alors de considérer les modèles à base d'agents artificiels et l'individualisme méthodologique comme des « instruments génériques », à savoir des dispositifs ayant des propriétés transversales à des problèmes explicatifs, à des domaines d'étude et à des disciplines hétérogènes. De ce point de vue, les modèles à base d'agents artificiels et l'individualisme méthodologique semblent partager des principes élémentaires qui sont indépendants des entités et des niveaux d'analyse propres à un objet d'étude particulier. En ce sens, cet article soutient finalement que les modèles à base d'agents artificiels et l'individualisme méthodologique sont intrinsèquement liés.

Cet article a un objectif général, permettre au lecteur un survol des principaux thèmes théoriques et méthodologiques traversant les recherches relatives à, et fondées sur, la simulation multi-agents. Il a également un objectif spécifique : aider le lecteur à mieux comprendre les contributions qui constituent le numéro thématique que la Revue française de sociologie a voulu consacrer à cette méthode. Pour ce faire, il aborde les points suivants : 1) l'originalité de la simulation multi-agents ; 2) le type d'explication que cette méthode permet de mettre en œuvre ; 3) le substrat informatique de la méthode ; 4) ses potentialités pour traiter le problème de l'agrégation ; 5) le rapport que l'on peut établir entre une simulation multi-agents et les données empiriques ; 6) les points critiques de la méthode.

Authoritative rational choice theorists continue to argue that wide variants of rational choice theory should be regarded as the best starting-point to formulate theoretical hypotheses on the micro foundations of complex macro-level social dynamics. Building on recent writings on neo-classical rational choice theory, on behavioral economics and on cognitive psychology, the present article challenges this view and argues that: (1) neo-classical rational choice theory is an astonishingly malleable and powerful analytical device whose descriptive accuracy is nevertheless limited to a very specific class of choice settings; (2) the 'wide' sociological rational choice theory does not add anything original to the neo-classical framework on a conceptual level and it is also methodologically weaker; (3) at least four alternative action-oriented approaches that reject portrayal of actors as computational devices operating over probability distributions can be used to design sociological explanations that are descriptively accurate at the micro level.

This article offers a critical analysis of four contemporary sociological debates. Systematic analysis of the relevant literature suggests the existence of a project for reformulating the methodological foundations of empirical quantitative sociology. This reconstruction shows the emergence of the following idea: an alliance of variable analysis, mechanism methodology, and simulation techniques would be of great help in resolving some of the impasses that "standard" empirical quantitative sociology encounters. This thesis is then tested for quantitative sociology of social stratification: where there are "irrefutable signs" that the idea is becoming acceptable. Lastly, a link is established between these recent debates and older, similar proposals for resolving the problem, and the question of why the soundness of these proposals has only recently been recognized is examined.

RéSUMé. — L'article propose une analyse critique du concept de « modèle » et de la place que celui-ci devrait occuper en sociologie. La première partie discute la possibilité et l'intérêt de concevoir l'activité de modélisation théorique comme construction systématique de « modèles générateurs ». La deuxième partie discute trois différents types de « modèles » (les « modèles statistiques », les « modèles informatiques », et les « modèles mathématiques »), et elle s'interroge sur leurs capacités respectives de « mettre en œuvre » un « modèle générateur ». Dans cette partie, l'article consacre une attention particulière à une forme récente de « modélisation informatique » (les systèmes multi-agents) : l'idée mise en avant est que ces « modèles » constituent l'outil le plus approprié pour formaliser et pour étudier des « modèles générateurs ». En guise de conclusion, l'article esquisse une manière possible d'intégrer les quatre acceptions mobilisées du concept de « modèle » afin de proposer un cadre de recherche cohérent apte à supporter un type de sociologie fondée sur une activité constante et systématique de « modélisation ».
