AbstractSupport and influences on adolescents' career choices come from a variety of sources. However, studies comparing the importance given to various sources of support are few, and none have analyzed differences in the support provided by mothers and fathers. This study aimed to examine quantitatively the importance given to support from various sources in a sample of 432 Swiss adolescents at two points in time in the period of choice and to explore qualitatively experiences related to support given/received by 10 mother–child dyads in the career choice process. The overall results endorse the mother as the main source of support.

AbstractThe purpose of the study was to test a model of factors predicting teachers' job and life satisfaction, burnout, dispositional optimism, social support, perceived workload, and self-efficacy. The model extends Lent and Brown's (J Voc Behav 69(2):236–247, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jvb.2006.02.006, 2006; J Career Assess 16(1):6–21, https://doi.org/10.1177/1069072707305769, 2008) social cognitive model of the interaction of sources of job and life satisfaction. Specifically, burnout, a condition with a high incidence rate among teachers, was included. The participants were 676 Swiss teachers. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. The results revealed the differential effect of the variables considered on teachers' burnout and job satisfaction, as well as their life satisfaction. Dispositional optimism, social support, and perceived workload might reduce the risk of teacher burnout; dispositional optimism, social support, and teacher self-efficacy seem to positively affect job satisfaction; and dispositional optimism alone, together with burnout and job satisfaction, directly relates to teachers' life satisfaction. Practical implications of these results are discussed.

AbstractThe type of nonwork orientation and decent work perception are supposed to be important factors that influence well-being at work. In this study, 196 Swiss apprentices enrolled in a vocational education training were assessed twice during the first 24 months of their apprenticeship. The results showed that there are specific links between nonwork orientations, decent work, and job satisfaction over time. Concerning relations among decent work dimensions, the results highlighted the importance of safe working conditions to predict complementary values perception and the importance of this in predicting adequate compensation perception. Implications for practice are discussed.

AbstractThe Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS) is one of the most widely used measures to assess career adaptabilities. Despite intensive worldwide use across heterogeneous populations, no study has assessed its factorial validity in the not in education, employment, or training (NEET) population. This study aims to extend evidence of CAAS factorial validity by assessing the Italian version for NEET. Participants (N = 318) completed the Italian CAAS. Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the hierarchical factor structure of this version. Evidence of measurement invariance across age and sex groups were observed. The results supported the CAAS as a reliable and good psychometrically-based assessment of career adaptabilities in the Italian NEET population.
