On February 24, 2022, we embarked on a war journey into the unknown, witnessing the war in Ukraine. Our contact with the war is mediated (mainly by the media), yet painful and saturated with extreme emotions. This article is an autoethnographic description of the experiences of this journey of three academics from Poland, a frontline country. The metaphor of the road is carried out by evocative autoethnography in terms of its symbolism of personal journey of each of us; nevertheless, it also unifies our experiences of war into one tender narrative. Embedded in the essence of our autoethnographic narrative of the war is a constant openness to new circumstances, the natural dynamics of action at the front and in the frontier country, and the constant search for and discovery of one's own narrative identity. Each part of this path traveled is inscribed in the baggage of personal experience, a narrative of life in a frontier country, unification by the situation of witnessing the war, and the desire to express our resistance to it. It became a form of mental resistance, analysis, empathy, and concern which were our methods of struggle and a way of taking responsibility for the reality we witness. In the description, we used the "tender narrative" proposed in the texts of Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk.

The articles collected in this volume constitute one of the results of a collaborative research project funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme (MSCA-RISE) under the theme of "Technologies of Imaging in Communication, Art, and Social Sciences." This project included researchers from the following institutions: Academy of Art in Szczecin (Poland - coordinator), The Polish University Abroad in London (UK), Association for Education, Science, and Culture in Szczecin (Poland), Univerzita Jana Evangelisty Purkyně v .st. nad Labem (Czech Republic), University of Macerata (Italy), University of the Witwatersrand (Republic of South Africa - until 01.02.2018), Pwani University College (Kenya - from 01.02.2018). The international research project TICASS focused on the investigation of technologies of imaging in communication, arts, and social science. The broad objective of the TICASS project was the perception of the public space – in different places and cultures – through visual language, visual learning, and visual literacy. The present volume is the outcome of an international conference, within the TICASS project, held at the Polish University Abroad in London in 2019, on the theme "The Visual Management of Mobility." The conference focused on how mobility is influenced by visual communication accessed via technology, how different recipient groups understand various kinds of visual communication in cities, and how people's behavior is influenced by visual communication in defined spaces of interaction. The contributors to this volume investigated the ways in which people engage with their environment and with each other on the basis of transformations in communication, mobility, and technological ways to access information. Social mobility, whether by foot, car, or public transport, is guided visually through signage, GPS, online maps, route planning, applications for public transport, and so on. This article was written as part of an academic project about the autoethnographs of the times of crisis that academic teachers from several universities in Poland took part in. From the collected stories about experiencing the pandemic, we singled out the thread of distance learning. We created a multivoiced narrative and then submitted it to a collective reflection. Collective autoethnography made it possible not only to recognize changes in the thinking about the self, academic culture, and teaching itself but also to pose questions about the possibility of transformation.
