The study of International Relations as a scientific discipline began in Spain in the 1950s, many decades after its beginnings & development in England & in the United States. In Spain, like in other countries, resistance emerged towards admitting International Relations as a discipline in Social Sciences, in part because of its supposed methodological weakness, & also because of the presence of other disciplines with a very strong settled academic & administrative structure, such as Law, Sociology & Political Science, whose departments have opposed systematically in the acceptance of the new discipline as a major in the university carrier, & has only been accepted as a subject for postgraduate study. Nevertheless, the teaching of this discipline in Spain has passed through three phases: initiation (1957-1971), where Antonio Truyol y Serra led as a figure; consolidation (1972-1983); & expansion (1983 to our days). Even with the important advances in the study & teaching of International Relations in Spain, resistance is still at hand for the creation of this major, especially in the schools of International Public Law.
