Este escrito presenta parte de los resultados de una investigación doctoral realizada sobre la dimensión política de los procesos migratorios contemporáneos en relación con las nuevas tecnologías de la información. Se discute en qué medida el uso de herramientas tecnológicas permite a los migrantes chilenos en Argentina modificar y/o ampliar el repertorio de acciones colectivas. Interesa mostrar, asimismo, los efectos que su utilización produce sobre los procesos de comunicación que se establecen y sobre las capacidades de acción en términos de demandas y reivindicaciones por derechos políticos transnacionales. ; This paper presents part of the results of a doctoral research on the political dimension of contemporary migration processes in relation to new information technologies. Discuss whether the use of technological tools allows Chilean migrants in Argentina modify or expand the repertoire of collective actions. AbstractThe role of citizens' collective action for the emergence and consolidation of democracy is generally analysed within bottom-up theories. However, top-down theories show that elites might impede or promote both democracy and collective action through a set of strategies which are often unobserved and vary over time. Democratic persistence and change require then to be assessed in a dynamic framework which considers both citizens and elites' strategies. For such reason, on a large sample of countries in the period 1971–2014, we jointly estimate the probability of collective action and democracy using a Structural Dynamic Model. This allows us to account for the dynamic nature of the two political phenomena under investigation by controlling for their persistence, for initial conditions and time-varying unobserved heterogeneity. We find that collective action matters for the emergence of democracy but not for its consolidation which seems to be related to more structural economic factors.

AbstractThis article investigates the presence of a farm–nonfarm income gap along the income distribution in the European Union. Our findings show that the income disparity between farm and nonfarm households varies at the opposite poles of the distribution within and between countries. On average, farm households in the lowest quartile are worse off than nonfarm households in the same quartile, whilst farm households in the highest quartile are better off than their nonfarm counterpart. We also provide some evidence on the time dynamics of the farm–nonfarm households' income gap by looking at its evolution after the Great Recession. Finally, the policy implications stemming from the results are presented. In particular, the importance of re‐directing the Common Agricultural Policy public support in two main directions: from the richest farm households to the poorest farm households, to reduce within countries' inequality, and from the richest countries to the poorest countries, to reduce between countries' inequality.

AbstractThe paper compares the income conditions of farm and nonfarm households in the whole EU and within three geographical groups of countries for the period 2008–2016. Overcoming the simple comparison of raw means of the groups, we estimate the farm/nonfarm income differentials by using Regression Adjusted and Covariate Matching techniques, which allow to control for observable characteristics among groups. Three innovative features of our analysis are that we account for the whole income of farm households (i.e. not only farm income), for the presence of in‐kind incomes from self‐consumption of produced goods and imputed rents from properties, and for the complex survey design. We find that an income differential still exists but with relevant differences across countries and along the period. Most of it is due to differences in the households' characteristics. Hence, comparing raw means of the two groups can be misleading. Nonmonetary sources of income play a not negligible role, improving the relative position of farm households. The role of agricultural and rural policy is discussed in the light of results.

Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure has been associated with serious endocrine-disrupting effects in humans and wildlife. Toxicological and epidemiological studies evidenced that BPA increases body mass index and disrupts normal cardiovascular physiology by interfering with endogenous hormones in rodents, nonhuman primates, and cell culture test systems. The BPA concentration derived from these experiments were used by government regulatory agencies to determine the safe exposure levels of BPA in humans. However, accumulating literature in vivo and in vitro indicate that at concentrations lower than that reported in toxicological studies, BPA could elicit a different endocrine-disrupting capacity. To further complicate this picture, BPA effects rely on several and diverse mechanisms that converge upon endocrine and reproductive systems. If all or just few of these mechanisms concur to the endocrine-disrupting potential of low doses of BPA is at present still unclear. Thus, taking into account that the incidence and/or prevalence of health problems associated with endocrine disruption have increased worldwide, the goal of the present review is to give an overview of the many mechanisms of BPA action in order to decipher whether different mechanisms are at the root of the effect of low dose of BPA on endocrine system.

En el presente artículo, nos interesa articular algunas síntesis parciales respecto de la dimensión política de los procesos migratorios contemporáneos a partir del estudio de la experiencia migratoria chilena en Argentina. Para ello, haremos hincapié en dos momentos concretos: por un lado, la migración política producto de la dictadura pinochetista (1973-1990) y, por el otro, la nueva migración económica-cultural que se puede registrar a partir de la década de 2000. En la primera parte del artículo presentamos las características generales de la migración chilena hacia nuestro país, poniendo el acento en las migraciones mencionadas para luego describir y analizar en clave comparativa sus respectivas formas de organización, participación y demandas políticas y sociales. Finalmente, esbozamos algunas reflexiones. ; Based on the case study of Chilean immigration to Argentina, this article presents a series of partial findings concerning the political dimensions of contemporary migration processes. We focus on two specific moments: first, the political migration spurred by Pinochet´s dictatorship (1973-1990); second, the new economic and cultural immigration visible after 2000.
