A discussion of the strategic information management needed to support a European intergovernmental social science program called MOST (Management of Social Transformations). Information needs in the preparatory, research design, fieldwork, & report phases are addressed to show how MOST can help in each. The exploitation of existing databases, creation of other databases, national & regional networking, development of technical infrastructures for the transmission of data, problems of multilingualism, & training of information workers & researchers are all addressed as aspects of strategic information management. The relationship between research, existing information, & policy is examined. It is suggested that although policymakers can & should use information gathered through research, the social sciences will suffer if their research is dominated by criteria not of their making. 1 Photograph, 5 References.
