This paper analyses the main characteristics of the representation of immigrant women as social actors in a sample from the Spanish press. The data consist of all the news items published on immigrant women in the digital editions of the Spanish newspapers El País, ABC and El Mundo from 1 January 2012 to 1 January 2022. Van Leeuwen's (2008) social actors' theory will show how immigrant women are portrayed linguistically in the corpus by analysing the main categories observed in the news items analysed: assimilation, role allocation, identification and functionalization. Moreover, corpus linguistics (CL) will be a powerful complementary tool to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) because it allows observation of the main patterns and collocations in discourse. The findings indicate that women are not very visible in the corpus and that they are mainly associated with prostitution and low-paid work. Thus, their representation is associated with victimization and vulnerability.
This study intends to contribute to critical discourse analysis (CDA) by observing how the discourse of the press represents immigrants. The objective of this paper is to observe the main linguistic characteristics used by the press to portray sub-Saharan immigrants as non-citizens, in a sample from the Spanish press. The corpus consists of the news items published in the digital editions of the newspapers El País and ABC from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2019. The main discursive characteristics analysed to observe the representation of immigrants as non-citizens are lexis, the use of figures and the passive voice. The methodology combines qualitative and quantitative data.
The analysis will show that the discourse of the press tends to represent immigrants in a negative way, to reproduce the dichotomy 'we-they' and to represent immigrants as 'the other'. The findings indicate that the recurrent use of certain words to refer to immigrants, the use of figures that evoke a sense of invasion and the representation of them as passive individuals do not favour integration but on the contrary the exclusion of immigrants from Spanish society, which thus promotes non-citizenship.
This article presents an analysis of the main discourses that appear in a sample of Spanish newspapers before and after the arrival of the Aquarius at the port of Valencia in June 2018, in order to observe if there is a solidarity discourse or one that rejects the arrival of the rescued immigrants in Spain. The corpus consists of all the news published from June 10 to July 10, 2018 in the electronic version of the Spanish newspapers ABC, El Mundo, El País and La Vanguardia. The methodology is mainly qualitative-descriptive. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) was chosen to observe the main linguistic characteristics of the collected news items and the topics that appear in the articles. The analysis shows that the testimonies of politicians and members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) predominate, but there are few testimonies of immigrants. The solidarity and acceptance of Spain are strengthened, as well as the defense of human rights. This contrasts with the discourses that the press presents after the arrival of the ship in Valencia. A discourse related to the health of immigrants and their need for help and resources predominates, a fact that contributes to the alarm of the majority group.
; The arrival of immigrants to Spain is a recurring theme in the press. This article will analyze the main discursive characteristics that are observed in a sample of the Spanish press to narrate the rescue and reception of the Aquarius ship in 2018 and the Open Arms ship in 2019. The analysis will allow us to observe, on the one hand, the main characteristics of both speeches and, on the other hand, the lexical similarities and differences between them and their relations with the political-social context in Spain. Following the tradition of critical discourse analysis, the methodology is fundamentally qualitative-descriptive. The examples analyzed show that the Aquarius' discourse is characterized by praising the welcome and solidarity of Spain and the rescue is linked to the defense of immigrants' human rights from the moment Spain decides to welcome them. However, reproach speech between the government and the founder of the Open Arms predominates in the speech related to the Open Arms. Only when the Audaz ship goes to rescue some of the immigrants in the Open Arms, there are references to human rights and to the solidarity of Spain, a fact that contrasts with Aquarius.

; This article presents an analysis of the main discourses that appear in a sample of the Spanish press before and after the arrival of the ship Aquarius to the port of Valencia in June 2018 in order to observe if there is a solidarity discourse or one that rejects the arrival of the rescued immigrants to Spain. The aim of this research paper is to analyse the key political posters made for the campaigns of Irish political party Fianna Fáil framed in the Celtic Tiger (1997-2008) and post-Celtic Tiger years (2009-2012). I will then focus on the four posters of the candidate in the elections that took place in 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2011 with the intention of observing first how the leader is represented, and later on pinpointing the similarities and possible differences between each. This is important in order to observe the main linguistic and visual strategies used to persuade the audience to vote that party and to highlight the power of the politician. Critical discourse analysis tools will be helpful to identify the main discursive strategies employed to persuade the Irish population to vote in a certain direction. Van Leeuwen's (2008) social actor theory will facilitate the understanding of how participants are represented in the corpus under analysis. Finally, the main tools of Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar (2006) will be applied for the analysis of the images. The study reveals that politicians are represented in a consistently positive way, with status and formal appearance so that people are persuaded to vote for the party they represent because they trust them as political leaders. The study, thus, points out that the poster is a powerful tool used in election campaigns to highlight the power of political parties.
The number of women immigrating to Spain in search of a better life has increased in recent years. However, very articles pay attention to the reasons why they emigrate. A corpus of 30 pieces of news related to immigrant women was collected from February 2012 to April 2013 from the digital version of the main Spanish newspapers El País, El Mundo and ABC. The main hypotheses in this research are: Immigrant women are not very visible in the Spanish press; they are mainly represented as vulnerable and as victims; and they are normally connected to social problems. To confirm or to disprove said hypotheses, this article employs critical discourse analysis, including visual grammar, to analyse the main topics of the pieces of news dealing with immigrant women, and the main linguistic and visual characteristics used to describe them. It transpires that immigrant women are portrayed in the Spanish press as dependent, passive and confined to their homes. Moreover, the majority of the articles on immigrant women associated them with prostitution. The partial representation of immigrant women observed in the corpus of examples does not favour the development of a society established on principles of democracy and equality. In this sense, it is necessary to rethink the depiction of immigrant women in the press, in order to question their role in modern-day migratory movements.
Although the socio-economic situation of Ireland has improved in the last decade, the situation of women continues to be unequal to men and there are certain limitations in their rights. Despite well-known exceptions, women have tended to be underrepresented in Irish politics. However, in the last elections some of them decided to run for the Republic's presidency as well as to become the first female Irish Prime Minister. In this sense, this research paper will try to contribute to the representation of women in the 2011 campaigns. Both general and presidential referendums will be under analysis. Our sample will consist of the most representative TV broadcasts of the main political parties (i.e. Fianna Feil, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, among others). As regards methodology, we will aim for the combination of critical discourse analysis and multimodal critical discourse analysis in order to observe the main visual representation of politicians as social actors (van Leeuwen, 2008), and consider the possible similarities and differences between women and men politicians. The study aims to observe if there are as many women as men politicians in the broadcasts of the 2011 electoral campaigns in Ireland and to pay attention to the way women and men politicians are portrayed in the broadcasts under analysis. The analysis will show that politicians are portrayed as elite individuals, that there is a general positive representation of the candidates and that women are underrepresented in Irish politics, which points out that it continues being a challenge for democracy the participation of women in politics since their representation or role is not equal compared to men.
The article intends to approach the representation of womanhood in the Irish press from 2006 to 2012. The corpus comprises all the texts dealing with women, from January 1 to 31 December of four years within this time range, taken from one of the main Irish broadsheet newspapers: The Irish Independent. The research database LexisNexis Academic was employed to compile the corpus. For the purposes of this research, Teun van Leeuwen's (2008) social actor network model was applied. This paper points out that Corpus Linguistics (CL) can be a powerful complementary tool to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). ; The research reported in this article has been conducted under the auspices of one project (FFI2011-25453) supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, and the European Union FEDER funds.
The article presents the analysis of a set of articles published in a Spanish newspaper on the return plan for immigrants. Since the data indicate that the plan is described as a phenomenon that is positive both for immigrants and for Spain, it is documented here how the newspaper legitimates the plan by presenting it to its local readers. Attention is paid to how immigrants are represented both linguistically and visually and how this form of representation actually reveals the newspaper's elite racist attitudes. The analysis, grounded in multimodal analysis and critical discourse analysis, contributes towards the study of the discursive representation of minority groups as "others" and extends the existing research by documenting how political measures against such minorities are discursively presented as actually being in their own interests.
