The fast and the fluoride: A pyridine derivative functionalized with tert-butyldimethylsilyl ether has been synthesized and used as a selective chromofluorogenic fluoride sensor in water/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide solutions. An electronic nose system (E-nose) with metal oxide semiconductor sensors (MOS) has been designed to discriminate and quantify different chemical warfare agents (CWA) mimics. The E-nose consists of an array of commercial MOS for different gases, two sensors for temperature sensing, a sample handling system, a data acquisition system and a laptop with the data acquisition system control. With this device, discrimination studies have been carried out to detect specific CWA simulants (diethyl chlorophosphonate (DCP), diethyl cyanophosphate (DCNP), diisipropyl fluoride (DFP)), their derivatives (diethyl 1-phenylethyl phosphonate (OP-1), diethyl (2- cyanoethyl)phosphonate (OP-2), dimethyl methyl phosphonate (OP-3) and diethyl (2-oxopropyl)phosphonate (OP-4)) and some potential interfering substances (sulfuric acid, ammonia, ethanol and acetone). Principal components analyses (PCA) show that it is possible to discriminate the studied organophosphorous CWA mimics (DCP, DCNP and DFP) from the other studied derivatives and potential interfering agents. In addition, DCNP quantification studies have been done by using partial least squares (PLS) and a mathematical model has been obtained to predict DCNP concentrations in air. In this model, the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.9567, the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) is 30 and the limit of detection (LOD) is 5 ppm so the model is considered valid. The potentiometric electronic tongue was built with thick-film serigraphic techniques using commercially available resistances and conductors for hybrid electronic circuits; i.e. Ag, Au, Cu, Ru, AgCl, and C. The humid electronic nose was designed in order to detect vapours that emanate from the wine and are apprehended by a moist environment. The humid nose was constructed using a piece of thin cloth sewn, damped with distilled water, forming five hollows of the right size to introduce the electrodes. In this particular case four electrodes were used for the humid electronic nose: a glass electrode, aluminium (Al), graphite and platinum (Pt) wires and an Ag-AgCl reference electrode. The humid electronic nose together with the potentiometric electronic tongue were used for the evaluation of the evolution in the course of time of wine samples. The use of a voltammetric electronic tongue as a tool to monitor grape ripeness is proposed herein. The electronic tongue consists of eight metallic electrodes housed inside a stainless steel cylinder. The study was carried out over a period of ca. 1 month (August 2012) on different grape varieties (Macabeo, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shyrah, Merlot and Bobal) from various vineyards near Requena and Utiel (Valencia, Spain). Apart from the electrochemical studies, the physico-chemical parameters, such as, Total Acidity, pH and °Brix, were also determined in grapes. The PCA models, obtained using the physico-chemical or electrochemical data, showed variation of ripenesswith time.Moreover the studywas completed by using partial least squares (PLS) regression in an attempt to establish a correlation between the data collected from the electronic tongue and Total Acidity, pH and °Brix values. A good predictive modelwas obtained for the prediction of Total Acidity and °Brix. This article focuses on the study of the release rate in a family of modified silica mesoporous supports. A collection of solids containing ethyl, butyl, hexyl, octyl, decyl, octadecyl, docosyl, and triacontyl groups anchored on the pore outlets of mesoporous MCM-41 has been prepared and characterized. Controlled release from pore voids has been studied through the delivery of the dye complex tris(2,2¿-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II). Delivery rates were found to be dependent on the alkyl chain length anchored on the pore outlets of the mesoporous scaffolding. Moreover, release rates follow a Higuchi diffusion model, and Higuchi constants for the different hybrid solids have been calculated. A decrease of the Higuchi constants was observed as the alkyl chain used to tune the release profile is longer, confirming the effect that the different alkyl chains anchored into the pore mouths exerted on the delivery of the cargo. Furthermore, to better understand the relation between pore outlets decoration and release rate, studies using molecular dynamics simulations employing force-field methods have been carried out. Two new aryl carbinols (1 and 3) have been synthesised and characterised and their ability as OFF-ON probes for the chromogenic detection of the nerve agent simulant in acetonitrile has been tested. In addition compound 2 has been also studied. The carbinols suffered a phosphorylation reaction followed by an elimination process giving rise to the corresponding carbocations. Two triaryl methane cations have been used as probes for colorimetric detection of nerve agent simulants. Buffered mixed aqueous solutions of 1 and 2 showed bathochromic shifts in the presence of DCNP (diethylcyanophosphonate) and DCP (diethylchlorophosphate). The colour modulation can be observed to the naked eye. 257 263 191 ; S ; The design, fabrication and validation of an optoelectronic sensor implemented in an easy-to-use portable device for the selective and sensitive detection of CO in air is reported herein. The system is based on the colour changes observed in the binuclear rhodium complex of formula [Rh2[(C6H4)P(C6H5)2]2(O2CCF3)2](CF3CO2H)2(1) upon coordinating CO molecules in axial positions. Complex 1 is used supported on cellulose chromatography paper. In this support, colour changes to the naked eye are observed for CO concentrations above 50 ppm. The probe is also implemented in a simple portable optoelectronic device.The cellulose support containing probe 1 in this device is placed inside a small dark chamber, is illuminated with a tricolour LED emitting at 624, 525 and 470 nm, respectively corresponding to red (R), green (G) and blue (B) light, and reflected light is detected by a photodiode. With a transimpedance amplifier, the current generated by the photodiode is transformed into a voltage compatible with the 10-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) port. Colour changes are measured as the distance d between the R, G and B data of the blank (probe without CO) and that for a certain CO concentration. Typical calibration curves are fitted using a bi-exponential equation. This system offers a typical response time of a few minutes (ca. 7 min) and a limit of detection of 11 ppm. The probe in the cellulose supports is also highly reversible.The optoelectronic device is portable (dimensions 14 × 8.5 × 3.5 cm; weighs approximately 270 g) and is powered by AA batteries. In addition, no variations in experimental parameter d upon exposure to CO2, N2, O2, Ar, water-saturated air and vapours of chloroform, hexane, ethanol, acetone, methane, toluene or formaldehyde are observed.
