The separation of women from the institutions of war is an outcome of the armed forces' professional development following the seventeenth century. Since then, women have been at the periphery of these institutions, serving as civilians in mostly ancillary tasks. In France, the movement away from the periphery toward the center of the military, ie, combat, has been a slow but steady process since WWI that accelerated after WWII. Today, one observes harmony between the SS of uniformed men & women, & a greater integration into the military establishment; the number of women has increased significantly, especially in the higher ranks. This movement toward the center is far from being completed, mostly because women are segregated from combat & combat-related duties, a phenomenon that in turn affects the distribution of F personnel in the ranks. The socioregional composition of women in uniform & their career motivations are also examined, as well as attitudes & opinions regarding the role of women in the military. 4 Tables. Modified AA.
