Since 2004, the EU has been China's principal trading partner. Trade between China & the 25 nations of the EU now surpasses 250 billion Euros per annum. The article takes a look at some of the positive & negative political, social, & cultural consequences of this important economic relationship. On the positive side, the relationship is of tremendous benefit to the economies of the EU, particularly those of Germany, France, & the UK. On the negative side, China is so different politically, socially, & culturally from the EU that it is only natural for misunderstandings & disagreements to have arisen. Given the fact that Portugal now occupies the rotating presidency of the EU, the article concludes with an extensive discussion of how Portuguese leadership can help bridge many of the gaps between the EU & China.
