As part of the application for Lisbon – European Capital of Sport 2021 developed in partnership between INDEG-ISCTE-IUL and the City Council, this study aims to analyse the determinants that people face when practising physical activity or sport. The positive outcomes from practising sport and physical activity are vast and vary from health related factors to psychological factors. Despite the attempts made nationally and by the EU, the active population practising sport or physical activity still is lower than expected. Therefore, this study contributes to the clarification of motivations and constraints that influence different genders and age range to practise sport and physical activity. This way, adequate policies and strategies can be developed and applied. After the literature review, the main factors, widely used to explain participation were identified. In fact, they were divided into three main dimensions: Motivations, Individuals' limitations and environmental barriers. Data was collected from professionals directly related to physical activity and sport participation in Lisbon. Through the statistical analysis, the information was segmented, and conclusions regarding the differences between gender and age ranges were drawled. It was concluded that the months where the abandonment is higher, regardless age or gender, are January and February. Concerning the sport and physical activity determinants: it were found differences in gender for all determinants, it were found differences in all determinants, with the exception of environmental barriers, for different age ranges. ; No âmbito do projeto do projeto Lisboa – Capital Europeia do desporto, desenvolvido pelo INDEG-ISCTE-IUL em parceria com a Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, este estudo pretende analisar quais os fatores que motivam e limitam as pessoas a praticar desporto e atividade física. Os impactos positivos da prática de exercício físico e desporto são vastos e variam desde fatores de saúde a fatores psicológicos. Apesar dos esforços feitos nacionalmente e pela União Europeia, as taxas de população ativa a nível da prática desportiva continuam aquém do esperado. Deste modo, visou-se perceber quais os determinantes que influenciam os diferentes géneros e faixas etárias a praticar desporto e atividade física para que, possam ser desenvolvidas e aplicas estratégias adequadas. Após a revisão de literatura foi possível identificar os fatores mais relevantes e amplamente utilizados para estudar a participação. Na realidade, foram divididos em três grandes grupos: Motivações, limitações do indivíduo e barreiras do meio envolvente. A informação foi recolhida junto de profissionais diretamente relacionados com a realidade desportiva em Lisboa. Através da análise estatística foi possível segmentar a informação e perceber quais as motivações e barreiras para diferentes géneros e faixas etárias. Concluiu-se a maior taxa de abandono ocorre nos meses de Dezembro e Janeiro, independentemente do género ou idade dos participantes. Relativamente aos determinantes da prática desportiva de atividade física: encontraram-se diferenças ao nível de todos os determinantes para os géneros e ao nível de todos os determinantes com a exceção das barreiras do meio ambientes para as diferentes faixas etárias.

AbstractThis article aims to contribute to understanding the main social impacts of the pandemic caused by COVID-19 by highlighting the present and future challenges of social intervention and proposing a research agenda for social workers. Based on main indicators collected from international reports, we categorise the terms associated and analyse 284 Scopus articles that address social work issues in face of the COVID-19 through a text mining literature analysis. By applying topic modelling, we are able to identify relations within the body of knowledge between the main indicators. The results enable to highlight the current trends of research, contributing to leverage knowledge in social work in face of a complex and uncertain society. We find that most articles are focused on professional practice, as well as areas such as health, education and employment. In contrast, we argue that issues related to women or migrants have been less explored. These aspects could bring new perspectives in future research within the pandemic context.

Faced with the demands of globalization Social Work has a key role in promoting community development. The relationship between Social Work and Human Rights focuses on values and principles essential to the integration of any person regardless of their social, economic, and cultural context. Through a study of social work praxis in an intercultural community context with immigrants, secondary statistical data were analysed, a semi-structured interview was applied to social workers and a categorical content analysis was chosen to treat the data. The results allowed us to realize that social workers appeal to an ethical and ontological matrix in relation to individuals, families, groups and communities and that community development intervention in the field of social policies implies participation strategies in favour of citizenship and Human Rights.

The knowledge of the optical properties of biological tissues in a wide spectral range is highly important for the development of noninvasive diagnostic or treatment procedures. The absorption coefficient is one of those properties, from which various information about tissue components can be retrieved. Using transmittance and reflectance spectral measurements acquired from ex vivo rabbit brain cortex samples allowed to calculate its optical properties in the ultraviolet to the near infrared spectral range. Melanin and lipofuscin, the two pigments that are related to the aging of tissues and cells were identified in the cortex absorption. By subtracting the absorption of these pigments from the absorption of the brain cortex, it was possible to evaluate the true ratios for the DNA/RNA and hemoglobin bands in the cortex—12.33-fold (at 260 nm), 12.02-fold (at 411 nm) and 4.47-fold (at 555 nm). Since melanin and lipofuscin accumulation increases with the aging of the brain tissues and are related to the degeneration of neurons and their death, further studies should be performed to evaluate the evolution of pigment accumulation in the brain, so that new optical methods can be developed to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of brain diseases. ; The work of L.M.O. was supported by the Portuguese Science Foundation, Grant No. FCT-UIDB/04730/2020. Despite the scientific consensus on the extinction crisis and its anthropogenic origin, the quantification of historical trends and of future scenarios of biodiversity and ecosystem services has been limited, due to the lack of inter-model comparisons and harmonized scenarios. Here, we present a multi-model analysis to assess the impacts of landuse and climate change from 1900 to 2050. During the 20th century provisioning services increased, but biodiversity and regulating services decreased. Similar trade-offs are projected for the coming decades, but they may be attenuated in a sustainability scenario. Future biodiversity loss from land-use change is projected to keep up with historical rates or reduce slightly, whereas losses due to climate change are projected to increase greatly. Renewed efforts are needed by governments to meet the 2050 vision of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Landnutzungswandel ist zweifellos ein Hauptgrund für Biodiversitätswandel und beeinflusst die Muster von Artenvielfalt von der lokalen bis zur globalen Ebene. Dennoch wird in aktuellen Untersuchungen von Biodiversitätswandel häufig vernachlässigt, dass Arten häufig nicht von Habitatverlust sondern von Habitatwandel betroffen sind und dass nicht alle Arten gleichermaßen auf Habitatwandel reagieren. Hier erweitere ich unser Verständnis von der Reaktion von Arten auf Habitatwandel und verfeinere eine Methode mit der Biodiversitätswandel auf verschiedenen räumlichen Skalen vorhergesagt werden kann.

In this paper we present three studies that demonstrate the applicability of spectroscopy methods and optical clearing treatments in pathology identification and monitoring. In the first study, by obtaining the absorption spectra of human healthy and pathological (adenocarcinoma) colorectal mucosa tissues, it was possible to identify a higher content of a pigment in the diseased tissues. This study also shows that machine learning methods can be used to reach the same differentiated results in vivo through diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. In the second study, the combination of collimated transmittance spectroscopy with optical clearing treatments allowed to obtain the diffusion coefficients of glucose in healthy and pathological colorectal mucosa as: Dglucose=5.8x10–7 cm2/s and Dglucose=4.4x10–7 cm2/s, respectively. This study also demonstrated that the diseased tissues contains about 5% more mobile water than the healthy tissues. The third study was performed to evaluate the protein dissociation mechanism of optical clearing. By treating both healthy and pathological colorectal mucosa tissues with 93%-glycerol, a protein dissociation rate of about 3 times higher was obtained for the pathological mucosa. All the discriminating parameters that result from these studies can be obtained in the in vivo situation through diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and further studies to evaluate their values in different stages of cancer progression are of great importance to develop disease monitoring protocols. ; The authors of the article knew well and communicated with Ekaterina Borisova for many years, especially Valery Tuchin and in recent years Luís Oliveira. In particular, H2BK47, H2BH110, H2AH83, and H4H76 were found to be potential hot spots for NVP incorporation. Notably, a remarkable selectivity to the imidazole ring of histidine was observed, with modification by NVP detected in three out of the 11 histidine residues of histones. Biodiversity and ecosystem service losses driven by land use change are expected to intensify as a growing and more affluent global population requires more agricultural and forestry products, and teleconnections in the global economy lead to increasing remote environmental responsibility. By combining global biophysical and economic models, we show that between the years 2000-2011 overall population and economic growth resulted in increasing total impacts on bird diversity and carbon sequestration globally, despite a reduction of land–use impacts per unit of GDP. The exceptions were North America and Western Europe, where there was a reduction of forestry and agriculture impacts on nature, accentuated by the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Biodiversity losses occurred predominantly in Central and Southern America, Africa and Asia with international trade an important and growing driver. In 2011, 33% of Central and Southern America and 26% of Africa's biodiversity impacts were driven by consumption in other world regions. Overall, cattle farming is the major driver of biodiversity loss, but oil seeds production showed the largest increases in biodiversity impacts. Forestry activities exerted the highest impact on carbon sequestration, and also showed the largest increase in the 2000-2011 period. Our results suggest that to address the biodiversity crisis, governments should take an equitable approach recognizing remote responsibility, and promote a shift of economic development towards activities with low biodiversity impacts.
