A higher level of mobility of people has marked the European Union (EU), with immigrants moving from one place to another, every year, looking for a better quality of life, often fleeing from war and poverty. In the wake of enlargement of the European Union, the United Kingdom (UK) experienced high inward migration. One of the main focuses of UK media coverage was immigration from Eastern European countries. The UK referendum on Brexit on 23 June 2016, was followed by an increase in hate crimes linked to migration issues and, subsequently, a media apparatus of toxic discourse and fear of the criminal 'Other'. This paper aims to reveal how newspaper articles and personal comments written in response to these articles, represented creative and media-driven anxieties about 'opening' borders in the EU. The empirical sample builds on news media coverage of the 'Euro-Ripper' case, published in two UK newspapers—the Daily Mail and The Independent. Based on critical surveillance studies and cultural media studies, I elaborate on the notion of moral panic, dramatised by the media, which mobilises specific compositions of 'otherness' by constructing suspicion and criminalising inequality by particular social and ethnic groups and nationalities. I argue that the media portrays the dramatisation of transnational narratives of risk and (in)security, which redraws territorial borders and (re)define Britain's global identity. The analysis shows how the news media in the Brexit vote continually raised and legitimised awareness related to the migration as a vehicle that enables the 'folk-devil' to cross borders. This context pos- tulates an ideology that converges on a relationship of intransigence and criminal convictions, in the context of a politics of inclusion and exclusion. 1) With the absence of a precise legal framework in Portugal, the concept of closed housing condominiums reminds us of an architectonic, social and symbolic heterogeneous universe. 2) The phenomenon of its emergence and expansion invites us to interchange, in an indivisible way, Space, City and Democracy, covering such an interpellation of a particular strategic potential in the discussion around the city that we have and its transformation in the city that we want. 3) The material and symbolic markers that distinguish closed condominiums from the generality of condominiums, the imagination about who lives in them, and the reasons and impacts underlying their origin and expansion, have become the thematic guiding principles of provocation and discovery the discourses of a group of socially and culturally diverse interlocutors, distinctly associated with the production and social appropriation of some of these enterprises, located in the city of Lisbon. 4) An analytically established dialogue between residents, agents associated with the provision of residential space, researchers and policy makers, from which - in between lines of rupture - emerges interesting and worrying spaces of mutual consensus and understanding, clarifying concerns and demands produced on the existing city, which seem to be shared between confessed adherents and opponents of these enterprises. Salmonella enterica serovar Agona is in the top 10 most common nontyphoidal serovars reported in humans in the European Union. Here we report the complete genome sequence of an S. enterica serovar Agona isolate, designated 24249, that was the cause of a pan-European outbreak in 2008 with 163 confirmed cases reported.

Natural deep eutetic solvents (NADES) are defined as a mixture of two or more solid or liquid components, which at a particular composition present a high melting point depression becoming liquids at room temperature. NADES are constituted by natural molecules and fully represent the green chemistry principles. For these reasons, the authors believe that the submit manuscript is a highly valuable contribution to the field of green chemistry and chemical engineering. The mite Varroa destructor is one of the most studied parasites in apiculture, and its genotype variation is a key factor for the severity of infestation in bee colonies. Here we report the genetic and reproductive profile of mites from 14 Brazilian states with different geographic and climatic conditions. We performed PCR to amplify a fragment of the COI gene and differentiate the haplotypes using restriction enzymes. The K haplotype was widely prevalent in the studied sites, while the J haplotype was found only in four municipalities. We also observed both haplotypes (J and K) coexisting in the same colony, a fact unprecedented in Brazil. Infestation levels were low (0.33 to 15.3%). The reproductive potential showed wide variation (0 to 1.5), indicating that even with the massive presence of K haplotype, environmental and biotic factors related to Africanized honeybees may be responsible for maintaining the mite under low levels in Brazil.

uncorrected proof ; This paper presents a novel approach towards the production of hybrid alginate-lignin aerogels. The key idea of the approach is to employ pressurized carbon dioxide for gelation. Exposure of alginate and lignin solution containing calcium carbonate to CO2 at 4.5 MPa resulted in a hydrogel formation. Various lignin and CaCO3 concentrations were studied. Stable hydrogels can be formed up to 2:1 (w/w) alginate-to-lignin ratio. Upon substitution of water with ethanol, gels were dried in supercritical CO2 to produce aerogels. Aerogels were characterized in terms of bulk density, specific surface area and pore volume. To introduce macroporosity, the CO2 induced gelation was supplemented with rapid depressurization (foaming process). Porosity, mean pore size and interconnectivity in the macroporous range were assessed by micro-CT. Youngâ s modulus of alginate-lignin aerogels was measured in both dry and wet state. Fast-dissolving delivery systems (FDDS) have received increasing attention in the last years. Oral drug delivery is still the preferred route for the administration of pharmaceutical ingredients. Nevertheless, some patients, e.g. children or elderly people, have difficulties in swallowing solid tablets. In this work, gelatin membranes were produced by electrospinning, containing an encapsulated therapeutic deep-eutectic solvent (THEDES) composed by choline chloride/mandelic acid, in a 1:2 molar ratio. A gelatin solution (30% w/ v) with 2% (v/v) of THEDES was used to produce electrospun fibers and the experimental parameters were optimized. Due to the high surface area of polymer fibers, this type of construct has wide applicability. ABSTRACT Due to their ecological and economic importance, honey bees have attracted much scientific attention, which has intensified due to the recent population decline of these insects in the several parts of the world. Among the factors related to these patterns, infection by pathogens are the most relevant, mainly because of the easy dissemination of these microorganisms. Although no zoonotic diseases are associated with these insects, the presence of infectious agents in bee products should still be considered because they play a role as disease dispersers, increasing the risk to animal health. Because of the possibility of dispersion of pathogens via bee products, this work aimed to identify the presence of spores of the pathogens Paenibacillus larvae, Ascosphaera apis and Nosema spp. in samples of honey, pollen and royal jelly that are registered with Brazil's Federal Inspection Service (S.I.F.) and commercially available in the state of São Paulo. Of the 41 samples of bee products analyzed, only one showed no contamination by any of these pathogens. N. ceranae and P. larvae had the highest prevalence considering all the samples analyzed (present in 87.80% and 85.37% of the total, respectively), with N. apis present in 26.83% and A. apis present in 73.17% of the samples. These results provide support for the formulation of government regulations for sanitary control of exotic diseases by preventing dispersion of pathogens, including through illegal importation, since local and international trade and the transfer of colonies between regions play important roles in the dispersion of these microorganisms.
