An exploration of how to achieve a successful conflict resolution/mediation describes the Aceh Peace Process & the Kosovo status process. The impact of the tsunami that hit Aceh is pointed out, along with the early peacemaking efforts of a Finnish businessman & the Center for Humanitarian Dialog. The later process led by the Crisis Management Initiative begun early in 2005 involved five rounds of talks over seven months & included the gradual establishment of trust; maintenance of dignity for all parties; & an emphasis on the principle that nothing is agreed before everything is agreed. The Kosovo status process was led by a Special Envoy that reported directly to the UN Secretary General & worked in consultation with a Contact Group of members from France, Germany, Italy, Russia, the UK, & the US. It was understood that Kosovo's status should strengthen regional security/stability, territorial integrity would be respected, & the ethnic population would be safely secured. The international community played an advisory role until Kosovo had implemented all measures stipulated in the agreement. Adapted from the source document.
