Values for Probation, Society and Beyond

This article draws from, and comments on issues raised by Mike Nellis (1995a) and the debate that followed in The Howard Journal about 'probation values for the 90s'. This article expands upon three themes within that debate; restorative justice, relational justice and reintegrative shaming. The strength of restorative justice, and factors that have possibly been important for the success of restorative practice in other countries are discussed. Concluding that the implementation of restorative practice is desirable, and considering the factors identified in other countries, a possible outline for developing restorative practice in England and Wales is briefly discussed.
