Na przełomie drugiego i trzeciego milenium ukazało się wiele nowych inspirujących prac, które podejmowały temat przyczyn bogactwa i ubóstwa na świecie. Wśród autorów znajdowali się zarówno wybitni historycy gospodarczy, jak i ekonomiści wykorzystujący analizę instytucjonalną. Celem artykułu jest przybliżenie najważniejszych prac opublikowanych w ostatnich latach podejmujących problem dysproporcji dochodowych na świecie i poszukujących przyczyn tego zjawiska. W przeglądzie uwzględniono ważniejsze pozycje z zakresu historii gospodarczej. Szczególne miejsce zostawiono na omówienie najnowszego dzieła Darona Acemoglu i Jamesa A. Robinsona "Why Nations Fail. The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty" [Dlaczego narody upadają. Geneza potęgi, dostatku i ubóstwa], w którym autorzy, korzystając z dziesiątków przykładów historycznych, również starają się wyjaśnić, skąd biorą się różnice między bogatymi a biednymi krajami. Praca Acemoglu i Robinsona jest instytucjonalną interpretacją historii i próbuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie, w jaki sposób historia kształtuje instytucjonalne ścieżki rozwoju narodów. Historia nie jest według nich przeznaczeniem, nie determinują jej też czynniki geograficzne, kultura, przypadek, a nawet ignorancja rządzących, ale determinują ją instytucje. Obok przybliżenia podstaw teoretycznych, które wykorzystują instytucjonaliści, w artykule znajdują się komentarze autorskie, wspomagane przykładami zachowań instytucji również na gruncie polskim.

Artykuł ma na celu ocenę skuteczności sankcji stosowanych przez państwa Zachodu wobec Iranu w okresie 40 lat (1979–2019). We wstępie postawiono hipotezę, że skoordynowane sankcje Stanów Zjednoczonych i państw europejskich mogą doprowadzić do osiągnięcia głównego celu wobec Iranu: ograniczenia programu nuklearnego rozwijanego przez to państwo. Program ten był postrzegany przez Zachód jako poważne zagrożenie bezpieczeństwa międzynarodowego. Przedstawiono powody nałożenia sankcji na Iran przez USA, ewolucję stanowiska europejskiego wobec ich stosowania oraz mechanizmy i skutki współpracy państw Zachodu w wywieraniu presji gospodarczej na Iran. Oceniono realizację amerykańskich i europejskich celów sankcji, tak, by zrozumieć powody wycofania się w 2018 r. Stanów Zjednoczonych z podpisanego w 2015 r. porozumienia z Iranem.

The article aims to evaluate the effectiveness of sanctions administered by Western countries against Iran over a period of forty years (1979–2019). It is hypothesised that coordinated sanctions by the United States and European countries could enable them to achieve the main goal: curtail Iran's nuclear programme, which is perceived by the West as a serious threat to international security. The paper presents the reasons for the United States imposing sanctions on Iran, the evolution of the European position on the validity of their administration, and the mechanisms and effects of Western countries' cooperation in exerting economic pressure on Iran. It also evaluates the implementation of U.S. and European sanction objectives in order to determine the reasons for the withdrawal of the United States in 2018 from the 2015 agreement signed with Iran. ; Artykuł ma na celu ocenę skuteczności sankcji stosowanych przez państwa Zachodu wobec Iranu w okresie 40 lat (1979–2019). In the article, we explore the factors which brought about the transatlantic coordination of the policy of imposing sanctions on Iran. We will mainly focus on the events in the 21st century when the new incentives for cooperation appeared due to the growing concern over the development of Iran's nuclear programme. Considering the capabilities of using the tools of economic statecraft and diplomacy, we claim that the EU-US cooperation can be termed a co-leadership. The assessment and the reasons for the transatlantic break-up on this matter during the presidency of Donald Trump was examined using the concept of relative gains. We evaluate to what extent the initial goals were achieved in practice, and we also try to predict the possible consequences of the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). As to whether the effectiveness of the sanctions through the cooperation has been enhanced, the answer is ambivalent. On the one hand, the cooperating transatlantic partners managed to coerce Iran through isolating the country from international economic contacts and negotiated the JCPOA. On the other hand, Trump's renouncement of this agreement brought many negative consequences and undermined the earlier joint effort.

Purpose. To present the changes in tourist arrivals in the Broader Middle East in the 21st century and to point at potential political and economic reasons influencing these changes. Method. Analysis of the rankings and statistical sets (mainly from World Bank) and the review of the events influencing the changes in tourist arrivals to the Middle East. Findings. Analysis points out that political factors and political security strongly impacted tourist arrivals to the Broader Middle East at the beginning of the 21st century, even more strongly than the threats and effects of the global financial crisis. Research and conclusion limitations. Difficulties in the separation of political and economic factors should be underlined. Practical implications. The paper may be used as didactic support by students of economic and touristic fields of studies. The results may be also used by tourists and travel agencies. Originality. There is lack of specialized papers concentrating within the objective scope regarding this region or during this period of time. Type of paper. A combination of an overview with empirical studies.

Abstract
Many thinkers made attempts to explain differences in economic development between countries, and point out what should be done to foster development. We review briefly some spectacular theories focused on these fundamental problems. We use the tools of economic analysis and the methods characteristic especially for institutional economics and economic history. However, the paper's central aim is to analyse and assess one of the newest voices in that still open discussion coming from Acemoglu and Robinson and presented in their "Why Nation Failed? The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty". Their book is brimmed with compelling illustrations, which we acknowledge as its strongest point. While the accuracy and coherence of their generalisations leave much to be desired. The analysis of those examples let to infer that the most important element encouraging or hampering economic development is the common participation of the people in economic and political processes.

Abstract
In this article, we identify the institutional offers for emigrants and evaluate the role of immigrants during the industrial revolution in the nineteenth-century history of three cities (once labelled 'Manchesters') from different parts of the Russian Empire. The dynamic growth of these cities was based on the textile industry but also depended largely on newcomers and highly mobile and entrepreneurial citizens. We show the key institutional factors that accelerated the immigrants' mobility to these Eastern European 'Manchesters' and made their role in urban development crucial. We claim the textile industry and institutional conditions for newcomers were prerequisites, but the entrepreneurship of a large number of immigrants proved crucial in these cities.
