M. S. Ahluwalia and A. Saith came to opposite conclusions about the effect of agricultural growth on rural poverty in India in articles published in this journal (Vol 14, No. 3 and Vol. 17, No. 2, respectively). Mathur brings out the reasons for the differences in their results and presents a more general model which shows more clearly the effect of agricultural growth on poverty. Ahluwalia's result that agricultural growth reduces poverty is verified by Mathur. (DÜI-Sen)
