The total set of norms governing the formation of Pam's in a society or soc collectivity may be thought of as a 'soc strategy of fam formation.' Such strategies have important consequences for soc structure & pop growth. The strategy of, for example, the F members of a given birth cohort can be given partial statistical representation by using census or survey data. 4 such strategies are constructed by means of categorization of 2 variables: Strategy A, early marriage, uncontrolled fertility; Strategy B, early marriage controlled fertility; Strategy C, late marriage, uncontrolled fertility; Strategy D, late marriage, controlled fertility. Age at marriage data are obtained directly from the census, while fertility control is estimated by comparison of N of children born to the N to be expected in a maximum fertility pop. On this basis, the soc strategies of fam formation of F cohorts of 6 nations are compared. Md age at marriage ranged from 22.5 to 27.2 yrs. The estimated % of F's attempting fertility control ranged from 35% to 72%. Further analysis indicated several SS & subcultural (including Ur/Ru) diff's between SES categories within countries. Finally, shifts in time in the 2 indices were discernible. Hyp's relating these diff's to structural features of societies or subcultures are needed if variations in soc strategies of fam formation are to be accounted for. P. Metzger.
