The text diagnoses two opposing tendencies in the research on algorithms: the first abstracts and unites heterogeneous developments under the term "algorithm"; the second emphasizes specifics such as data sets, material conditions, software libraries, interfaces, and so on, thus dissolving that which apparently algorithms do into more fine-grained analyses. The text proposes a research perspective that resolves this tension by conceiving of algorithms as a relation between the abstract and the concrete that allows to capture both in their interdependence. This approach is informed by two motives: first, the necessity to connect detailed analyses of specific information technologies with general political concerns; and second, the application of recent feminist critiques of epistemology to the analysis of algorithms. The ensuing relational perspective on algorithms is connected to the genealogy of algorithmic technology before being demonstrated regarding the mutually complementing relationships: algorithms-materiality, algorithms-data, algorithms-code, and algorithms-interfaces.

Der Text setzt sich kritisch mit Debatten über selbstfahrende Kraftfahrzeuge auseinander, die in Bezug auf sogenannte Trolley Probleme oder andere Dilemmafälle geführt werden. Er zeigt, dass diese Fälle sehr voraussetzungsreich sind. Das verschiebt die Aufmerksamkeit weg von anderen soziale, politische oder ethische Probleme, die mit Einführung autonomer Autos sehr sicher relevant werden oder verändert die Art und Weise, wie auch solche Probleme diskutiert werden. Anschließend analysiert der Text detailliert das in Debatten um autonome Fahrzeuge implizierte Mensch-Technik-Verhältnis. Dazu wird Bezug auf ähnliche Konfigurationen im Bereich autonomer Waffensysteme genommen. Dadurch wird die Idee einer «Ethik als Konfiguration» erzeugt und perpetuiert. Eine ethische und politische Debatte über künstliche Intelligenz müsste hier ansetzen, unter anderem weil dieses Mensch-Technik-Verhältnis ein ethisch korrektes Töten impliziert und problematische Formen kategorisierender und wertender Epistemologien legitimiert. ; The text engages critically with current debates on self-driving vehicles that relate to what are known as «trolley problems» and other dilemmas. It argues that these cases depend on very specific presuppositions. This shifts attention away from other social, political, or ethical problems that will most certainly become relevant with the introduction of self-driving vehicles. The text offers a detailed analysis of the relationship of humans and technology that is implied in the debates on autonomous vehicles. It then connects this relationship with similar configurations in the area of autonomous weapon systems. This analysis shows how the idea of «ethics as configuration» emerges and is perpetuated. An ethical and political debate on artificial intelligence needs to problematize this idea, especially because such a relationship of humans and technology implies that ethically correct killing is possible and legitimizes problematic forms of categorizing epistemologies.

Next to popular term Internet addiction, problematic Internet use (PIU) has established itself as an umbrella term for all types of repetitive impairing behaviors associated with new media technologies. Yet, debates about categorization, prevention, and treatment are nowhere near settled. When it comes to classification, medical-psychiatric research has so far retained authority. Here, PIU is examined primarily at the level of the individual user, and it is at this level that solutions are sought. Complementing this, research from critical algorithm studies and technology ethics emphasize the design of many applications as problematic, while cautioning against a determinist view of technology making people addicted. Based on new materialist conceptions of responsibility, the article argues for integrating the different perspectives into a relational understanding of co-addictive human–machine configurations. The goal is to capture the interactive character of PIU, and to achieve a well-calibrated distribution of responsibilities in avoiding destructive habits.
