The prospects for democracy's survival across Commonwealth Africa are considered. It is contended that evidence supporting the assertion that certain nations' previous experience with democratic institutions would facilitate democracy's reintroduction to these nations currently remains inconclusive. An overview of the different forms of political representation practiced in Commonwealth African nations is presented & demonstrates the unresolved nature of this issue. Claims that processes of democratization have become accepted in Commonwealth Africa are challenged by the identification of corruption in the election processes of several African nations. Additional arguments for democracy's incorporation into Commonwealth Africa are countered by citing examples of nondemocratic executives, media repression, & the failure of external pressures & economic sanctions. Despite the aforementioned problems, it is concluded that democratic institutions continue to receive overwhelming public support & that such institutions will persevere into the early 21st century. First published in 1998, Peacekeeping in Africa was written to help make up the shortfall in the number of books that concentrated specifically on peacekeeping in Africa. The book covers the main peacekeeping operations of Africa, and provides a wealth of background material. In doing so, it explores the policies and actions of the international organisations concerned and the participating African states. It also considers the impact of sub-regional powers and the role of the USA, Britain, and France. Comprising three parts, Peacekeeping in Africa examines world perspectives, case studies, and wider issues surrounding Africa's peacekeeping operations.

"This title was first published in 2002: Examining the recent phenomenon in conflicts in Africa, this text addresses situations where African states and African military intervene in conflicts either in neighbouring states or beyond. While this trend has been widely observed, this is the first in-depth research that deals with such issues. It breaks new ground in identifying the key issues, actors and actions, and includes analysis of military capacities of African states and the way in which armies are used, including the increasing role of private security companies and mercenaries. The changing attitudes among members of the OAU are examined, in particular the increasing acceptance of interventionism and the blurring of boundaries. The most significant cases of intervention are examined together with less well-documented examples such as Lesotho and Guinea Bissau. This engaging account makes for a compelling resource for academics and practitioners alike."--Provided by publisher.
Post-colonial Africa has seemingly been in an intractable state of conflict and war for a considerable period of time. This volume explores the process by which these wars were ended, discusses the lessons learnt, and examines the sustainability of recently reconciled conflicts to see how far peace solutions are permanent in this region. Ending Africa's Wars is an important and timely book for all those interested in conflict, democracy, international organizations, civil society, refugees, gender and the economic reconstruction of Africa.

(DÜI-Sbd)
