The role of tourism in the development of Third World economies is investigated. A review of available empirical evidence indicates that tourism fails to contribute to genuine development; even worse, it tends to block initiatives toward development. To rely on income from tourism is very risky, since this economic sector is highly sensitive to changes in demand, which are influenced by many SE & cultural factors. Tourism tends to reinforce previously established patterns of dependence & inequality, & it dislocates systems of scarce resources: this is felt especially in traditional, key sectors, eg, agriculture, fisheries, & crafts. Tourism accelerates processes of societal alientation & even deformation, resulting in the destruction of cultural values & social relations. This process is increasingly provoking resistance among the affected group. Modified HA

Der Tourismus gewinnt für die Ökonomien auch sozialistisch orientierter Dritte-Welt-Länder an Bedeutung. Dabei vermag er nicht zu einer wirklichen Entwicklung beizutragen, sondern hemmt im Gegenteil Entwicklungsbemühungen. Generell stellt er einen hinsichtlich der Nachfrage instabilen Wirtschaftszweig dar; sein Ausbau bedeutet Fehlallokationen und oftmals politische Repression. Darüber hinaus fördert er gesellschaftliche Entfremdungs- und Deformationsprozesse, die eine Zerstörung kultureller und sozialer Beziehungen mit sich bringen. (GB)
