This introduction to special journal issue summarizes the articles presented, which derived from a workshop at Nuffield Coll, Oxford, UK, in Jan 2000. They demonstrate how gender can be successfully incorporated into mainstream public policy analysis as they build on earlier work by feminist scholars & analyze recent attempts by EU & national policymakers to implement a gender-mainstreaming strategy. Feminist scholars from various disciplines interested in public policy analysis are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of gender as a relevant dimension & the coming together of feminist theory & public policy analysis has been driven by second-wave feminism & new postpositivist analytical approaches. It is concluded that gender mainstreaming is a potentially radical strategy; it should ensure that policymakers incorporate gender into the policy-making process & require EU & national policymakers to review the way in which they conceptualize policy problems. 63 References.
