The Shining Path and Peruvian Terrorism
Aspects of the Peruvian Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) are studied, including leadership, structure, & terrorist strategies. Overviews of leader Abimael Guzman's educational & political careers & Maoist political agenda are presented. It is maintained that Sendero Luminoso views armed conflict as the only way to realize its political objectives; the group's escalation of violence during the early & mid-1980s is documented to bolster this position. Multiple factors that have expedited the organization's growth are identified including its isolation from Peruvian society & reliance on violence. However, several elements may threaten Sendero Luminoso's stability in the future, including its decision to not develop international ties with other states or terrorist organizations & the eventual death of Guzman. It is concluded that the weak nature of Peru's democratic institutions renders the government extremely vulnerable to terrorist behavior. J. W. Parker
