The pol'al activities of Japanese students, as exemplified in their stopping of President Eisenhower's projected visit to Japan in 1960 have prompted this study, supported by the Group Psychol Branch of the US Office of Naval Res re the suceptibility of Japanese students to the influence of persuasive COMM's. Some special difficulties due to the Japanese character & the novelty of the procedure had to be overcome. In 1933 approximately 400 S's from 6 U's were pretested on att's to some current pol'al problems &, after an interval of 1 or 2 weeks were presented with various patterns of persuasive COMM's. Post-testings of att's with the same scales revealed changes due to the exp'al treatments. Ratings of the 'convincingness' of the COMM's were obtained on a 7 point scale. The topics presented in contrasting att's were the Cold War, the Cuban missile crisis & the projected visit of the US nuclearpowered submarines to Japan. The problems investigated were: direct vs indirect influence; order of presentation; argument org (1-sided vs 2-sided) & the COMM medium (written & spoken word). Only 2 procedures produced a signif shift in att's: students at Keio U increased their moderate support of the US position on Cuba after they read a presentation & students at Nihon U became less antagonistic to the visit of the submarines after listening to a 2-sided argument in favor. However, the absence of a short-range change does not prejudice the possibility of a long-range effect on att's. I. Langnas.
