In 1901 Albany Law School honored one of its most famous Alumni President William McKinley with the degree of Doctor of Laws. He graduated from Albany Law School in 1867. President McKinley sent the law school a letter in response to the degree expressing his appreciation for the honor. The letter had Executive Mansion Washington letterhead on it and was type written. President McKinley signed the letter which was dated June 14, 1901. The letter was sent to Charles J. Buchanan the Secretary of the Board of Trustees for Albany Law School. President McKinley would be assassinated a few months later in September of 1901 in Buffalo, New York. This is a copy of the letter that appeared in the Albany Law School Annual Circular of Information in 1909. The original letter is framed for posterity.

This 4-page document is a 1901 "Report of Investigations upon the Forests of the Southern Appalachian Mountain Region." In 1900, the Appalachian National Park Association submitted a Memorial to Congress and, on May 25, 1900, a bill passed authorizing funds to investigate the possibility of a national park. Although the organization had major successes early on, their efforts met with resistance and the organization disbanded in 1905.

Before his position as President of the United States, McKinley (1843-1901), a Republican, served as Ohio's 39th governor from 1892 to 1896. He was a popular congressman prior to his election to governor. As governor, he helped to reduce state debt by enacting a new and broader tax system. In response to labor tension during his administration, McKinley established a state board of arbitration to resolve disputes and called out the National Guard to resolve a major coal strike in 1894.
