Purpose - In this exploratory paper, we discuss and reflect upon some of the major (quality) issues concerning supply chain management (SCM) for Chinese companies. Design/methodology/approach - We draw upon the literature, especially the theoretical perspectives of service orientation and dynamic capabilities. We develop a macro-analysis of SCM issues within a conceptual framework and posit ideas for further research. Discussion and reflection of interview findings is interwoven with the literature and on-going case study analysis. Findings - In conjunction with our conceptual framework (Figure 1), the influence of government, improving relationships through Guanxi and developing overall logistics capacity are identified as important dynamic capabilities for Chinese companies. Specific SCM issues such as: the role of distributors; regional supply networks and; information sharing are also identified and discussed. We suggest ideas for further research based on the discussion presented. Research limitations/implications - Given the relatively small number of qualitative SCM studies in recent years concerning China, an exploratory discussion and reflection of key issues from a macro-analytical perspective is important. However, no empirical findings, propositions, nor hypotheses were developed as part of the current thought-piece. Nevertheless, the insight gained from the conceptual framework and ideas posited are useful for developing a future research agenda. Originality/value - The paper has been written in response to calls for a wider understanding and reflection of the quality issues associated with the development of SCM in China. - See more at: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?issn=0265-671x&volume=30&issue=4&articleid=17077685&show=abstract#sthash.1eZCfe9H.dpuf
This article describes the process and findings of a community study that was part of a task force to improve educational experiences for new English learners, particularly the large number of Latinos. Based on the analysis of a series of focus group interviews and a survey, the article discusses how students coming from other countries are usually accustomed to a different classroom environment and may be confused about how to relate with their teachers and with other students during class. At the same time, educators may not possess adequate knowledge about students'prior educational experiences and the cultural models of schooling in Latino communities. The article argues that educators need to consider both the risk and success factors for new immigrant students and examine more closely the nature of communication between students, teachers, and parents.

We have reviewed the research from an international perspective and have highlighted the common trends that impact women across the globe. Although progress has been made, there is still much that needs to happen before equality of opportunity is realized. This paper highlights the macro and micro level factors that have an impact on women's rise to powerful positions and the progress and reactions thereafter. The psychological research indicates that it is not sufficient to address the individual challenges of being a woman in business or in politics. The current emphasis is on women as individuals and relies on them taking action. But this fails to address the wider societal impacts. It is not sufficient for women to focus on building their networks, increasing their social capital and enhancing their motivation. This fails to take into account the institutional and societal biases that undermine opportunities for women. We recommend changes in the way that women approach opportunities in the workplace, and in the way that policy makers and employers act. We highlight the importance of embracing diversity more broadly, not simply from a gender perspective. Only in this way, can there be equality of opportunity and an enhancement of diversity in the workplace. We address the practical implications from the psychological research and provide advice for organizations, senior executives, women throughout their professional careers and for young women as they start their career journey. ; This research was sponsored by the Alliance for Organizational Psychology (AOP) and coordinated through the Board Effectiveness Group of the British Psychological Society.
