AbstractIn this study, we present a screening method based on molecular absorption spectrometry to study PFAS uptake and fate in plants. To evaluate the suitability of this method we analyzed plant extracts with molecular absorption spectrometry (MAS) as well as liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) for mass balance studies (w(F)). French bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) were grown on soil spiked using eight PFAS substances that vary in chain length and functional group composition. Specifically, these include three short-chained (C4–C5), five long-chained (C7–C10) carboxylic acids, one sulfonic acid and one sulfonic amide moieties. To investigate substance-specific PFAS uptake systematically, PFAS were spiked as single substance spike. Additionally, we studied one mixture of the investigated substances in equal proportions regarding w(F) and four PFAS mixtures of unknown composition. After 6 weeks, the plants were separated into four compartments. We analyzed the four compartments as well as the soil for extractable organically bound fluorine (EOF) by high resolution-continuum source-graphite furnace-molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-GFMAS) as well as for sum of ten target-PFAS by LC–MS/MS. All three short-chained PFAS perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluorobutanoic sulfonic acid (PFBS) and perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) were determined in high concentrations mainly in the fruits of the investigated plants while long-chained PFAS perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) were mainly determined in roots. PFBS was determined in remarkably high concentrations in leaves compartment by both quantification methods. Overall, comprehensive results of single substance spikes were in good agreement for both methods except for a few cases. Hence, two phenomena were identified: for mixed PFAS spikes of unknown composition huge differences between EOF and sum of target PFAS were observed with systematically higher EOF values. Overall, both methods indicate comparable results with MS being more reliable for known PFAS contamination and MAS being more valuable to identify PFAS exposure of unknown composition.

Abstract
Background
Cathodic protection by sacrificial anodes composed of aluminum-zinc-indium alloys is often applied to protect offshore support structures of wind turbines from corrosion. Given the considerable growth of renewable energies and thus offshore wind farms in Germany over the last decade, increasing levels of aluminum, indium and zinc are released to the marine environment. Although these metals are ecotoxicologically well-studied, data regarding their impact on marine organisms, especially sediment-dwelling species, as well as possible ecotoxicological effects of galvanic anodes are scarce. To investigate possible ecotoxicological effects to the marine environment, the diatom Phaedactylum tricornutum, the bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri and the amphipod Corophium volutator were exposed to dissolved galvanic anodes and solutions of aluminum and zinc, respectively, in standardized laboratory tests using natural seawater. In addition to acute toxicological effects, the uptake of these elements by C. volutator was investigated.

Results
The investigated anode material caused no acute toxicity to the tested bacteria and only weak but significant effects on algal growth. In case of the amphipods, the single elements Al and Zn showed significant effects only at the highest tested concentrations. Moreover, an accumulation of Al and In was observed in the crustacea species.

Conclusions
Overall, the findings of this study indicated no direct environmental impact on the tested marine organisms by the use of galvanic anodes for cathodic protection. However, the accumulation of metals in, e.g., crustaceans might enhance their trophic transfer within the marine food web.

Zur Abschätzung des Risikos von per- und polyfluorierten Verbindungen (PFAS) für Mensch und Umwelt besteht Forschungsbedarf hinsichtlich ihres Verbleibs in der Umwelt und hier im Besonderen im Hinblick auf ihre Persistenz in Abfallströmen. Um diese Fragestellung zu adressieren, hat das Umweltbundesamt das Forschungsvorhaben "Untersuchung des Vorkommens von PFAS (Per- und polyfluorierte Alkylverbindungen) in Abfallströmen" initiiert. Dieses Vorhaben hat das Ziel einer ersten Identifizierung, Quantifizierung und Bewertung des Vorkommens von PFAS in bestimmten Abfallströmen. Die Notwendigkeit dieser Erfassung und des daraus abgeleiteten Forschungsbedarfes ergibt sich direkt aus dem Stockholmer Übereinkommen über persistente organische Schadstoffe (POP), in dessen Anhang A bereits Vertreter aus der Gruppe der PFAS (PFOS, ihre Salze und PFOSF, PFOA ihre Salze und PFOA-verwandte Verbindungen sowie PFHxS, ihre Salze und PFHxS-verwandte Verbindungen) aufgenommen wurden. Um eine repräsentative Probennahme durchführen zu können, wurde hierzu in einem ersten Schritt die aktuelle Situation anhand der verfügbaren Literatur dargestellt und hieraus relevante Abfallströme identifiziert. Auf Grundlage dieser Ergebnisse wurde ein Probenplan für die als relevant identifizierten Abfallströme entwickelt und eine gezielte Probennahme vorbereitet und durchgeführt. Anhand der erhaltenen Ergebnisse aus der Literaturrecherche und der Analytik wurden die Risiken für Mensch und Umwelt sowie die Auswirkungen auf die Abfallwirtschaft abgeschätzt, sowie Vorschläge zur Grenzwertsetzung und zu möglichen Entsorgungswegen abgeleitet.
