A historical survey of Indian conditions under British rule concludes with the reasoning that under colonialism, India came to identify imperialism with the West. Hence a feeling of sympathy & solidarity developed among those Asian countries which had been dominated by Western powers. In addition, there were common ties of religion & culture to encourage such solidarity. Indian sensitivity demanded equality of status with foreigh powers of the West, while the security against outside aggression, provided for by British rule, made Indians look on potential aggression from communist countries as non-existent. Instead the USSR appeared as the champion of anti-imperialism & China was looked upon as the land of Fa-Hien & Yuan Chwang. In short, a habit of virtuous deprecation became common in India, reinforced by the idealism generated by the influence of Gandhi & Nehru. C. Akin.
