How to interview legislators for meaningful empirical research

This case focuses on the use of elite interviews in case study methodologies by examining a research project that used this method to study American state policymaking in the Maryland legislature. This case starts with a brief discussion of the value of case study methodologies in helping us understand the effects of causes and highlights the importance of elite interviewing for this methodology. Most of the case is a discussion of the three stages of elite interviewing—advance preparation, conducting the interviews, and postanalysis—and concludes by highlighting important lessons for someone using these techniques for the first time.
