Les propriétés de la production d'entropie par unité de temps (FORMULE) sont examinées pour quelques systèmes de réactions sans se limiter à l'approximation de lois phénoménologiques linéaires. En général, le théorème de la production d'entropie minimum ne reste pas valable lorsque l'état stationnaire se trouve loin de l'état d'équilibre thermodynamique. Toutefois l'auteur montre que même dans ce cas les propriétés caractéristiques de la production d'entropie ne sont pas entièrement perdues. Ainsi, suffisamment loin de l'état stationnaire, P ne peut que décroître quelle que soit la position de cet état stationnaire par rapport à l'équilibre.

Classical discussion of the stability of thermodynamic equilibria has generally been based on the existence and properties of thermodynamic potentials such as Gibbs' free energy, etc... More recently another criterion of stability has been introduced, based on the sign of the entropy production caused by a perturbation in the system. This latter criterion also remains valid in cases for which no thermodynamic potential exists. Some of its consequences are discuss¬ ed, and in particular, comparison is made with the general conditions of stability for the solutions of the corresponding differential equations (the rate equations). It is shown that the stability criterion based on the sign of the entropy production must be supplemented by the principle of microscopic reversibility (i. e. Onsager reciprocal relations) in order to assure asymptotic return of the perturbed system to its initial equilibrium position.
