The Biotechnology Act in Norway, one of the most restrictive in Europe, forbids egg donation and surrogacy and has rescinded the anonymity clause with respect to donor insemination. Thus, it limits people's choice as to how they can procreate within the boundaries of the nation state. The author pursues this significant datum ethnographically and addresses the issues surrounding contemporary biopolitics in Norway. This involves investigating such fundamental questions as the relation between individual and society, meanings of kinship and relatedness, the moral status of the embryo and the role of science, religion and ethics in state policies. Even though the book takes reproductive technologies as its focus, it reveals much about vital processes that are central to contemporary Norwegian society

AbstractLabour regimes organize the economy; they also organize lives. With the continued deregulation of the labour market and the simultaneous drive to cut labour costs, there lies a challenge to grasp not only the workings of capital but also the way such processes impact on the organization of everyday labouring lives. This implies a focus that is attentive to value, combining political economy with moral economy. I suggest that household analysis represents one way to address such issues. Household analysis provides a means of ethnographic access to a particular temporal dynamic that is revealing of a layered texture of precariousness, capturing at one and the same time the material realities and the intimate relations of living. Regimes of labour and regimes of value can thus be brought into the same frame, indicating relational dependencies as well as structures of social inequality. Drawing on earlier ethnography amongst landless tobacco growers in Corrientes, Argentina, I draw attention to the potentials of a particular perspective, all the while paying attention to the specific historical and political context. Anthropology is well placed to grasp contemporary configurations of labour and how these both are framed by and contribute towards reproducing social and economic inequalities, not only locally but also at a more global scale.

Résumé Grâce aux biotechnologies, on peut intervenir dans la création de la vie ; ce fait sans précédent a provoqué de nombreuses réactions dans le monde entier de la part de publics très différents. Pour comprendre l'une des réactions que l'application de ces technologies a suscitées en Norvège, l'auteure analyse un processus législatif – la loi sur les biotechnologies – en le reliant à un phénomène discursif : la « société de tri ». L'idée d'une société qui procède au tri de ses membres concerne des domaines aussi variés que ceux de la politique et de la biotechnologie, de la connaissance et de la religion, ou encore de l'embryon et des choix et restrictions dont il est l'objet. Expression d'un courant dans la biopolitique norvégienne, cette idée est à l'origine d'une publicité éthique.
