AbstractThis quantitative study evaluates how 71 Spanish undergraduate students perceive and interpret the uncertainty inherent to deterministic forecasts. It is based on several questions that asked participants what they expect given a forecast presented under the deterministic paradigm for a specific lead time and a particular weather parameter. In this regard, both normal and extreme weather conditions were studied. Students' responses to the temperature forecast as it is usually presented in the media expect an uncertainty range of ±1°–2°C. For wind speed, uncertainty shows a deviation of ±5–10 km h−1, and the uncertainty range assigned to the precipitation amount shows a deviation of ±30 mm from the specific value provided in a deterministic format. Participants perceive the minimum night temperatures as the least-biased parameter from the deterministic forecast, while the amount of rain is perceived as the most-biased one. In addition, participants were then asked about their probabilistic threshold for taking appropriate precautionary action under distinct decision-making scenarios of temperature, wind speed, and rain. Results indicate that participants have different probabilistic thresholds for taking protective action and that context and presentation influence forecast use. Participants were also asked about the meaning of the probability-of-precipitation (PoP) forecast. Around 40% of responses reformulated the default options, and around 20% selected the correct answer, following previous studies related to this research topic. As a general result, it has been found that participants infer uncertainty into deterministic forecasts, and they are mostly used to take action in the presence of decision-making scenarios. In contrast, more difficulties were found when interpreting probabilistic forecasts.

Room temperature pseudodielectric function spectra ε(ω) ≤ ε1 (ω) + iε2(ω) of the ordered defects compounds Cu2In4Se7, CuGa 3Se5 and CuGa5Se8 have been measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The values of refractive index n and extinction coefficient k are given. The structures observed in ε(ω) spectra have been analysed using different methods, including fitting the numerically differentiated experimental spectrum (second derivative) to analytical line shapes. As a result, the energies corresponding to the fundamental gap (E 0) and higher critical points have been determined. The analysis is performed on events containing one isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum and exactly two b-tagged jets in the final state. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1. The signal is extracted using a maximum-likelihood fit of a discriminant which is based on the matrix element method and optimized in order to separate single-top-quark s-channel events from the main background contributions, which are top-quark pair production and W boson production in association with heavy-flavour jets. The measurement leads to an observed signal significance of 3.2 standard deviations and a measured cross-section of σs=4.8±0.8(stat.)-1.3+1.6(syst.) pb, which is consistent with the Standard Model expectation. The cation disorder in Cu2ZnSnS4 thin films grown by flash evaporation of ZnS, CuS and SnS binary compounds has been studied by Raman spectroscopy. Process parameters such as the substrate temperature during the evaporation and the Ar pressure in the post-thermal treatment determined the samples' composition and Raman spectra. As a measure of cation disorder, the half-width and relative intensity of the Raman band peaking at 331-332 cm-1 is analysed. Comparison of the spectra for different samples of known composition showed that the relative intensity of the 331 cm-1 defect peak correlates with the previously reported theoretical prediction about enhancement of antisite defect formation in Cu2ZnSnS4 under "Cu-poor, Zn-rich" conditions. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 1.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy √ s = 7TeV.Chargedparticle distributions, excluding the lepton–antilepton pair from the Z-boson decay, are measured in different ranges of transverse momentum of the Z boson. Distributions include multiplicity, scalar sum of transverse momenta, beam thrust, transverse thrust, spherocity, and F-parameter, which are in particular sensitive to properties of the underlying event at small values of the Z-boson transverse momentum. The measured observables are compared with predictions from Pythia 8, Sherpa, and Herwig7. Three differential measurements are performed as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum and longitudinal boost of the t ¯t system. The t ¯t pairs are selected in the single-lepton channels (e or μ) with at least four jets, and a likelihood fit is used to reconstruct the t ¯t event kinematics. A Bayesian unfolding procedure is performed to infer the asymmetry at parton level from the observed data distribution. The inclusive t ¯t charge asymmetry is measured to be AC = 0.009 ± 0.005 (stat. + syst.). There are very limited data on the impact of ART initiation on inflammatory and coagulation biomarkers compared to patients who remain ART naïve [1]. We designed a prospective comparative study to evaluate these changes. Prospective observational cohort study of HIV‐infected patients who start ART and a group of age‐matched controls who remain ART‐naïve. Blood levels of insulin, fibrinogen, D‐dimer, high‐sensitivity PCR, inflammatory (IL‐1β, IL‐6, MCP‐1 and sCD40) and anti‐inflammatory cytokines (IL‐4), were compared at baseline, 24 weeks and 48 weeks. Summary of results: 94 patients included (57 treated, 37 controls). Baseline characteristics were balanced except for (treated/controls): median [IQR], HIV duration (0.9 [0.4–2.4] / 2.7 [0.6–5.5]) years, CD4 nadir (262 [198–317] / 452 [367–553]) cells/µl, viral load (4.4 [4–5.1] / 3.8 [3.1–4.4]) log cop/ml, current CD4 count (283 [213–323] / 525 [449–669]) cells/µl, HDL cholesterol (38 [29–45] / 41 [36–50]) mg/dl and female gender (8.8%/35%). There were no differences between groups in baseline biomarkers levels except that those starting ART had lower median [IQR] IL‐1β (4.1 [3.5–4.7] vs. 4.6 [3.7–6.8] pg/ml; p= 0.019) and lower IL–6 levels (4 [3.4–4.6] vs. 5.2 [4.2–6.6] pg/ml; p< 0.001). No significant correlation was found between biomarkers and baseline viral load. 91% of treated patients achieved viral suppression (<50 c/ml). There were statistically significant differences between groups at week 48 with lower (mean [95% CI]) D‐dimer (−138.2 [−268.0, −8.4] mg/L; p=0.001), IL‐1β (−0.6 [−0.9, −0.4] pg/ml; p<0.001) and higher IL‐4 (0.6 [0.2, 0.9] pg/ml; p=0.004) in those starting ART. In the ART‐naïve group there were significant increases of IL‐1β (1.3 [0.9, 1.6] pg/ml; p<0.001), sCD40 (22.7 [0.8, 44.6] AU; p=0.043), IL‐6 (0.5 [0.0, 0.9] pg/ml; p= 0.049) and a significant decrease of IL‐4 (−0.7 [−1.1, −0.3] pg/ml; p=0.001) levels. After 48 weeks of ART there were statistically significant decreases in pro‐inflammatory and coagulation markers (Figure 1) while levels of anti‐inflammatory cytokines (e.g. IL‐4) were significantly increased. Opposite trends were found in controls.In conclusion, compared to untreated controls, 48 weeks of effective ART significantly reduces pro‐inflammatory (IL‐1β, IL‐6), coagulation (fibrinogen, D‐dimer), and metabolic (insulin) markers and increases levels of an anti‐inflammatory cytokines like IL‐4.Median percentage changes in bio markers from baseline to week 48.image

The measurement is performed for tt¯ events in the lepton+jets channel. The cross-section is reported as a function of the hadronically decaying top quark transverse momentum for values above 300 GeV. The hadronically decaying top quark is reconstructed as an anti-kt jet with radius parameter R=1.0 and identified with jet substructure techniques. The observed yield is corrected for detector effects to obtain a cross-section at particle level in a fiducial region close to the event selection. A parton-level cross-section extrapolated to the full phase space is also reported for top quarks with transverse momentum above 300 GeV. A method utilising the production of τ leptons via W → τν decays is used. This method is applied to the sample of 20.3 fb−1 of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012. The reconstructed hadrons are used to classify the decay mode and to calculate the visible four-momentum of reconstructed tau candidates, significantly improving the resolution with respect to the calibration in the existing tau reconstruction. The performance of the reconstruction algorithm is optimised and evaluated using simulation and validated using samples of Z → ττ and Z(→ μμ)+jets events selected from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy √ s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb−1 ; We thank CERN for the very successful operation of the LHC, as well as the support staff from our institutions without whom ATLAS could not be operated efficiently. The 4ℓ events are produced in the decays of resonant Z and Higgs bosons and the non-resonant ZZ continuum originating from qq-, gg, and qg initial states. A total of 476 signal candidate events are observed with a background expectation of 26.2 ± 3.6 events, enabling the measurement of the integrated cross section and the differential cross section as a function of the invariant mass and transverse momentum of the four-lepton system. Events containing at least two jets with pT>20GeV are selected and analysed in terms of variables which discriminate between diffractive and non-diffractive processes. Cross sections are measured differentially in ΔηF, the size of the observable forward region of pseudorapidity which is devoid of hadronic activity, and in an estimator, ξ~, of the fractional momentum loss of the proton assuming single diffractive dissociation (pp→pX). Model comparisons indicate a dominant non-diffractive contribution up to moderately large ΔηF and small ξ~, with a diffractive contribution which is significant at the highest ΔηF and the lowest ξ~.
