This article deals with the culture, mentalities and motivation of Red Army soldiers in the second world war. It first assesses the evidence, since the destructive and traumatic nature of total war makes research more difficult than usual. In the case of the Soviet Union, too, the iron grip of censorship ensured that certain versions of events and even feelings would be treated as universal. Bearing these limitations in mind, the article then explores soldiers' diaries, letters and testimonies, matching these with other types of report, and traces the changes in outlook and motivation that drove successive generations of soldiers to fight in this most grim and destructive of European wars.
