Following the 2007-2008 food crisis, improvements of world food governance was at the centre of international discussions, leaning towards a new Global Partnership for Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition. In this process, the issue of the management of various streams of knowledge appeared a central element to allow for better policy coordination, and led to the creation of the High Level Panel of Experts on food security and nutrition (HLPE). Here we describe the genesis and unveil the rationale underneath the creation of this expert process aiming at a better shared understanding of food insecurity of its causes and of potential remedies, and at helping policy-makers to look forward to emerging issues. Innovative technologies – from digital technologies, biological technologies, processing technologies and new wood-based products, to social innovations and innovative finance mechanisms – have the potential to revolutionize forest management and to make critical contributions to sustainable development along forest value chains. Innovation will be key in the coming decades, to meet an increasing demand for wood and forest products and services while halting and reversing deforestation, in line with the commitment taken at COP26 in Glasgow by the international community. However, innovative technologies uptake has been slow and uneven in the Asia-Pacific region and divides remain between political commitments and the required investments, in education, capacity building and infrastructure development, required to make them happen on the ground. To address these issues, FAO and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), lead center of the CGIAR research programme on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA) have developed a roadmap for the uptake and scaling up of innovative technologies in the forest sector in Asia and the Pacific, building upon state-of-the-art knowledge, and extensive consultation of key regional stakeholders. This publication explores possible ways and suggests concrete recommendations for policy- and decision-makers to support the dissemination and adoption of innovative technologies' dissemination and adoption in Asia and the Pacific and to overcome current barriers.

Despite the high level of political engagement and the wide range of organizations involved in restoration projects from local to global levels, beyond some success stories, restoration is not happening at scale. To address this issue, three CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs) – Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA); Policies, Institutions and Markets (PIM) and Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) – decided to bring together their expertise in a joint stocktaking of CGIAR work on restoration. This publication illustrates with concrete examples the powerful contribution of forest and landscape restoration to the achievement of most, if not all the 17 sustainable development goals. It can be used to support the design of future restoration activities, programs and projects. We hope that this document will help upscale restoration efforts and deliver enhanced impact from our CGIAR research.

Forests and trees have a major role to play to advance the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and address major global challenge such as: climate change, deforestation, forest and land degradation, biodiversity erosion, poverty and food insecurity. Over the last ten years, with the Bonn Challenge, the New York Declaration on Forests, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and several regional initiatives, forest and landscape restoration has gained increased traction on the political agenda. Successful and sustainable land restoration implies to consider a wide range of interconnected variables and, thus, requires a broad, diverse and transdisciplinary knowledge, as well as a deep understanding of local socio-ecological contexts. Research and development institutions play a central role in generating the needed knowledge and sharing it with the relevant stakeholders. This is why FTA, the CGIAR research program on forests, trees and agroforestry prepared with its partners this compilation of existing restoration tools developed by CGIAR research programs (CRPs), CGIAR cen ters and partner organizations. This document aims to inform the different stakeholders involved in restoration at different scales (policy makers, forest managers and restoration practitioners, land owners, project managers, conservation organizations, students and researchers) and help them find the tools they need to achieve their specific objectives in a given context.
