Pressure groups correspond to a general tendency in pol'al life. However, it is not easy to define or list them. A possible definition might be: a group which wishes to influence authority. It is simpler to analyze the characteristics of such groups & their relationship to power. Characteristic of pressure groups in contemporary society are: a tendency to organize, the introduction of personal interests in the domain of the state, & a tendency to persuade. As far as group action re the conduct of public affairs is concerned, 3 points can be considered: (1) groups & the condition of gov leadership, (2) groups & pot, & (3) groups & the notion of public welfare. (3) is a complex concept which raises philosophical & moral questions. Tr & modified from IPSA by A. Chapman.
