Vague Quantifiers

While the responses to many survey questions use vague quantifiers such as 'very' or 'not too,' little is known about the characteristics of such terms. A variety of studies dealing with such quantifiers are reviewed. Data from a survey by E. Blair, et al, ('How to Ask Questions about Drinking and Sex,' Journal of Marketing Research, 1977, 14, 315-321) are used to derive estimates of the actual frequencies indicated in various situations for three quantifiers: not too often, pretty often, & very often. 4 Tables.
