Black political participation increased substantially between 1952 & 1972. Reasons for this are explored on the basis of presidential election year surveys conducted by the Survey Research Center of the U of Michigan & a survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center of the U of Chicago, reported by Sidney Verba & Norman H. Nie (Participation in America: Political Democracy and Social Equality, New York: Harper & Row, 1972). Prior to the increase in black political participation, black associational membership was commensurate with, or even greater than, that for whites. The growth of black political participation is a consequence of a change in the type of voluntary groups with which blacks became affiliated. Blacks changed their voluntary memberships from nonpartisan to political organizations. These political organizations flourished & promoted a greater skill & competence among their members, which led to the increase in black political participation. 6 Tables, 2 Figures. Modified HA.
