People are using the future to search for better ways to achieve sustainability, inclusiveness, prosperity, well-being and peace. In addition, the way the future is understood and used is changing in almost all domains, from social science to daily life. This book presents the results of significant research undertaken by UNESCO with a number of partners to detect and define the theory and practice of anticipation around the world today. It uses the concept of 'Futures Literacy' as a tool to define the understanding of anticipatory systems and processes – also known as the Discipline of Anticipation. This innovative title explores: • new topics such as Futures Literacy and the Discipline of Anticipation; • the evidence collected from over 30 Futures Literacy Laboratories and presented in 14 full case studies; • the need and opportunity for significant innovation in human decision-making systems. This book will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, policy-makers and students, as well as activists working on sustainability issues and innovation, future studies and anticipation studies.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to put the paper by Jay Ogilvy in the context of current debates around the philosophical foundations of future studies.Design/methodology/approachThe paper takes the form of a review and analyzes the current literature on foresight and philosophy of the future.FindingsThe paper finds that the practical challenge of taking a "scenaric stance", as articulated in "Facing the fold", cannot be addressed without going beyond the typically epistemological solutions proposed by most futurists.Research limitations/implicationsThe challenge is not finding ways to "know" the future, rather to find ways to live and act with not‐knowing the future.Practical implicationsThe "scenaric stance" points to a way of embracing what Henri Bergson calls "the continuous creation of unforeseeable novelty."Social implicationsThe "scenaric stance" offers one way of addressing the difficult, often deeply painful challenge of reconciling the desire for certainty with the desire to "be free" – in the Senian sense of capacity – by providing a way to embrace ambiguity and spontaneity.Originality/valueThe emergence of new solutions to how people think about the future rather than what kind of future reflects a confluence of events in the realms of theory and practice. The reason why one needs to and can rethink how one thinks about the future is original to the present conjuncture.

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to explore the relationship between equity and schooling in a post‐industrial society using a scenario of the learning intensive society.Design/methodology/approachThe method used here, but not elaborated as such, is based on a "hybrid strategic scenario method" that is a technique for building "futures literacy".FindingsIndustrial era schooling may be incompatible with post‐industrial heterarchical equity.Practical implicationsBy questioning the role of schools in developing the capacities necessary for post‐industrial society this article calls for an examination of emergent alternatives.Originality/valueBoth the method and conclusions are distinctive and may be valuable for strategic conversations aimed at questioning the assumptions that shape the decisions made today.

Few dispute the very strong likelihood that within twenty years the global information infrastructure, often referred to as the internet or "the net" will become as generalized, indispensable and invisible as today"s phone or electrical networks. Many commentators also expect this digital web to become the host for cyberspace, the next frontier. This article provides an overview of where a wide range of experts from business, government and the academic world believe this rapidly expanding global information infrastructure is heading over the next two decades.

Ken J. Tarbuck has used the creation of material goods & their exchange value in capital as criteria to distinguish between productive & unproductive labor ("Marx: Productive and Unproductive Labour," Studies in Political Economy, 1983, 12, fall, 81-102). His use of the idea of a "material" good is confusing, since material is often an attribute of services as well as goods. He also seems uncertain about the difference between production & circulation in relation to use- & surplus-value. An alternative definition of productive & unproductive labor is presented, based on the difference in the concpets of "productive" & "production." In A Comment on Miller's Comment, Ken J. Tarbuck charges that Riel Miller has omitted the important qualification of using products & their produced capital in a social way that is integral to his (Tarbuck's) distinction. Miller's examples of services that are material goods (ie, songs & haircuts) are ludicrous. Finally, Miller seems confused about micro- & macrolevel analysis. D. Dunseath.

PurposeThis article aims to be an expository introduction to Robert Rosen's anticipatory systems, the theory of which provides the conceptual basis for foresight studies.Design/methodology/approachThe ubiquity of anticipatory systems in nature is explained.FindingsCausality is not violated by anticipatory systems, and teleology is an integral aspect of science.Practical implicationsA terse exposition for a general readership, such as the present article, by definition cannot get into too many details. For further exploration the reader is referred to the recent book More than Life Itself by the author.Originality/valueThe topic of anticipatory systems in particular, and methods of relational biology in general, provide important tools for foresight studies. It is the author's hope that this brief glimpse into the world of relational biology piques the interest of some readers to pursue the subject further.
