Galician is a minority language spoken in Galicia, an autonomous region in northwestern Spain. This paper will provide some basic data on the evolution of the sociolinguistic situation of Galician. It will consider the dynamics of change and revitalisation of the language and will examine the linguistic policies that underpin them. In 1981, the Statute of Autonomy of Galicia was approved, establishing the co-official status of Galician. In 1983, the Galician Parliament passed the Law on the linguistic normalisation of Galicia, which laid the ground for the language policies of successive autonomous governments. After four decades, there are several symptoms that the language policy is inadequate for promoting Galician, based on a non-confrontational model centred on the teaching and learning of Galician and the promotion of its literary and cultural prestige.
From the definition of fear as a collective and political phenomenon, in this article we propose that the analysis of its manifestations at the beginning of the nineteenth century should be included as one of the explanatory elements of the political participation of the urban plebs in Rio de la Plata revolutionary process.
; It is the purpose of the present contribution to offer a synthetic overview of the trajectory of D. Alfonso Rodriguez Castelao (Rianxo, 1886-Buenos Aires, 1950) during the 1940-1950 decade. It was a "porteño" stage, because almost all of it was spent in Buenos Aires. This decade was an important stage not only in his biography but also in his projection into the transoceanic Galicia (the "ideal Galicia") that he was instrumental in building, and at the same time, forging his image as a key figure in it. We consider his performance in terms of political action under the Spanish exile and in close relationship with the Basque and Catalan nationalists, with particular attention to its projection in the Galician community of Rio de la Plata -composed by emigrants and exiles with its internal tensions - and his complex relationships with the Galicianist resistance inside Spain. We discuss the dilemmas between his artistic and political dimensions, in which is embodied the opposition he establishes between Tradition and History of a people with its own cultural personality that he claimed as a nation. Finally, we will check the discursive development of these tensions in his most important speech, "Alba de Gloria" ("The dawn of Glory").
