National audience On studied the use by beginners of a specification method (grafce) for the analysis of the operation of an automated process. Students shall modify the method taught to adapt it to their representation of this operation, in particular by addressing aspects of the procedure directly related to the purpose before its prerequisites. These results are interpreted in terms of the different status of these aspects in their memory. ; This paper presents the way in which control engineering students use -and modify- the specification method they learned to analyse the functioning of an automated process (a method based on the Grafcet formalism). The students were studied during a "programmable controller" program design task in which they had to make a functional analysis of the functioning of an automated process. The study shows the specific role of prerequisites. The students modified the Grafcet method they had learned in order to adapt it to their mental representation of the functioning they had to analyse. In particular, they did this by processing the aspects of the process directly related to its goal before the process prerequisites.
