Before Covid-19 around a quarter of the UK's rough sleeping population were non-UK nationals, with the proportion rising above half in some metropolitan areas. The UK government's targeting of rough-sleeping EU citizens for 'administrative removal' between 2010–2017 reflected a trend in social policy towards enforcement- rather than support-based 'solutions' to migrant homelessness. Changes to the Immigration Rules in late 2020 to make rough sleeping a ground for refusal or cancellation of permission to be in the UK represent a revival of this tendency. This commentary analyses UK policies targeting rough sleeping non-UK nationals for deportation from a practitioner's perspective – the author ran a rights project for homeless migrants between 2018 and 2021.

The recent rise in 'lone-wolf' style violent extremism has precipitated a shift away from traditional security-based responses, towards approaches designed to prevent the process of radicalisation. However the causes of radicalisation and violent extremism are incredibly multifaceted and there is little in the way of clear theoretical or conceptual structure to understand the radicalisation process, or to guide policy formation. This report will argue that social identity theory provides a more structured mechanism for understanding the causes of radicalisation in Australia, and that this theoretical approach can be translated into recommendations to more effectively counter the radicalisation process. This report examines a range of countering violent extremism and counter terrorism measures taken by the Australian government, and critiques their function in the context of social identity theory. This report finds that despite an ostensible shift towards preventative measures, existing government policy demonstrates a limited understanding of the social impacts of political rhetoric and counter terrorism responses. Reconceptualising radicalisation as a social issue, and understanding the implications of policy in the context of social identity theory, allows for the better formulation of policy responses to countering radicalisation and extremism.

The Matter of Beauty proposes that Victorian aesthetic theory is not a branch of philosophy focusing on art; rather, it is best understood as an interdisciplinary investigation of how humans relate affectively to physical things. The central claim of the dissertation is that aesthetic theory in the late-Victorian period enabled a significant reconsideration of what a "human" was, and of how distinctions could be drawn between self and other. I pursue this claim across four authors -- Walter Pater, William Morris, Grant Allen, and Vernon Lee -- who represent different modes in which a materialist strain of aesthetics led to a recognition that individuals constitutively lack autonomy from one another and from their surroundings.My analysis of a wide range of late-Victorian writing demonstrates that aesthetic theory responded to a question that was powerfully raised by nineteenth-century science, and that remains with us today: If our most elevated emotions can be localized as electrical activity in the brain, is there a "self" that transcends our material being? The intellectual tradition that I reconstruct reveals that considering aesthetic experience is a productive step toward answering this question. In their discussions of art and literature, Pater, Morris, Allen, and Lee develop a discourse of bodily sensations rather than of moral feelings; for them, aesthetic pleasure is important not because it is uplifting, but because it makes enjoyable the interconnectedness of bodies, minds, and matter. Furthermore, recovering this discourse allows us to revisit critical commonplaces about the political significance of Victorian aesthetics. Over the past two decades, the tendency has been to frame questions about the politics of aesthetics in oppositional terms: e.g., is aestheticism queer or misogynist, progressive or reactionary? I look elsewhere in order to evaluate the politics of aestheticism: representations of the individual as a material thing lacking autonomy reconfigured the relation between self and society. Materialist aesthetics showed individuals to be inherently dependent upon their contingent environments, thereby calling into question context-free ideals of personal freedom and individualism.

The United States Air Force maintains thousands of facilities around the world. Many of these facilities have asphalt built up roofs or some other less than sustainable roofing system. In an effort to find roofing systems suitable for Air Force facilities that are both economically and environmentally friendly, this thesis investigated vegetated roofing as a possible alternative to conventional roofing systems. While vegetated roofs are a relatively new roofing system, they exhibit performance qualities that seem to be in line with Air Force needs. An investigation into the feasibility of vegetated roofing technology revealed that this roofing system has many positive economic and environmental characteristics that could benefit the United States Air Force and the Department of Defense. The potential use of this technology was researched specifically for application to building 15 at Air Force Plant 4 (AFP4) in Ft. Worth Texas. A combination of case studies, site visits, and a life cycle economic evaluation was used to compare vegetated roofing with conventional asphalt built up roofing that is typically used at AFP4. The research revealed multiple environmental benefits and few disadvantages. The life cycle costs combined with the environmental benefits of vegetated roofing show that this roofing system is indeed a feasible alternative for building 15.

Institutions of higher education fail to address ongoing systemic racism within their classrooms, boardrooms, and commons when university personnel and students are not prepared to discuss racism and structural inequalities that exist within the campus community. To address this at a public, Predominantly White Institution (PWI), a group of students, staff, and faculty developed an action-oriented community to increase awareness and advocacy efforts against systemic and micro-level racism. Founded by faculty in the university's BSW and MSW programs, the Anti-Racism Working Group (ARWG) is composed of faculty, staff, and students from multiple university departments. The goals of ARWG include education and awareness, and dialogue about race, ethnicity, bias, power, and privilege; cultivating interdisciplinary faculty and student relationships, and inspiring anti-racist actions. This paper discusses and disseminates research about ARWG's inaugural year and early assessments of the program. Data includes responses from students who attended ARWG workshops and found them useful in their conceptualization and self-awareness around race, privilege, and taking anti-racist action. ARWG members benefited around three themes including skill development, relationship building, and the increased awareness and ability to engage in productive discussions around race, power, and privilege. We share these results with other universities and organizations to encourage the creation of similar programs and to facilitate learning from our experiences.
