The paper covers operations features of Huntington Ingalls Industries, one of the leading contractors of the US Department of Defense (DoD), in terms of financial performance and business outlook. In general, taking into account the increase in the DoD budget and the increase in appropriations for the procurement of military equipment and weapon systems, as well as R&D, we can say that this had a positive impact on companies of the US military–industrial complex as a whole (both larger and smaller) and led to improved financial performance and level of investment attractiveness. At the same time, it is quite obvious that the high growth rates of the DoD budget cannot be maintained for a while, which in the long run presents significant risks for the companies, as it can lead to a decrease in funding and the volumes of government contracts. Since there are a significant number of studies and publications for large companies in the sector, the author puts emphasis on smaller companies, the number of papers on which is small, but analysis on which is important because of their role and functions in the US military–industrial complex. These include Huntington Ingalls Industries, which specializes in the implementation of the US Navy's shipbuilding program. The analysis showed that the dynamics of its financial and economic operations, in general, can be characterized positively, despite the observed moderate decrease in values of some financial ratios. The outlook for its business in the long run can be assessed as sustainable, but for the period after 2025, attention should be paid to a number of risks that are primarily associated with a reduction of the US Navy shipbuilding program.

In the modern world, where borders are gradually "erased", an educated person should know at least a spoken foreign language. For a long time, mastering various types of reading and mastering professionally directed vocabulary was the goal of teaching foreign languages at universities, which led to a passive ability only to understand texts, and not to produce their own statements. Teachers of a foreign language who work with students of technical specialties faced the task in a short time to teach, first of all, functional English for effective interpersonal and business communication in a foreign language environment and gradually form students' ability to use a foreign language for practical work in the specialty, improving their professional level, achieving career goals.

This article discusses ways to control the formation of linguistic competence of students of non-linguistic directions of training in modern conditions of teaching foreign languages. Special attention is paid to such types of control as dictation, test, translation tasks and mental map, which can be effectively used both as part of the current control and during the final certification. There are different types of dictations: bilingual, monolingual, continuous and selective. The basic requirements for tests as one of the evaluation tools are established. The importance of translation tasks in the framework of monitoring the formation of students' language competence is noted. The role of creating mental maps and working with them in the integrated assimilation of new information, as well as in the development of creative abilities when learning foreign languages on the example of French and German, is emphasized. In the conditions of technologization of the educational process, new forms of conducting these types of control are proposed: online dictation, computer testing, creating mental maps using various Internet services. Attention is focused on training sites containing monolingual online dictation and tests designed for different age groups and levels of foreign language proficiency.

The conceptual paradigm of improving the activities of modern universities is the orientation to the strategic development of the educational institution. The relevant research is relevant for domestic universities in the context of globalization challenges and the reform of modern education, the aggravation of inter-university competition within the country and abroad.

St. Petersburg State University hosted the 5th International Seminar of Young Tibetologists. Bringing together researchers from different countries, this regular interdisciplinary conference was the first major international academic Tibetology event held in Russia. The paper describes the scientific topics of the conference sections, gives an overview of the scientific findings and reveals their importance for national science.
