Notions of ethnicity and identity have become highly politicised questions. In the theoretical discourse on these subjects they are either understood as being in a state of fragmentation or intensification. Modernisation is often associated with technological and economic development in the lives of states and it is also understood as a kind of threat to cultural identity, because of the thin line between promotion and exploitation of local, regional and national industries and culture, by global markets. Hannerz (1996) states, "Globalization is a matter of increasing long-distance interconnectedness . much of the world is now self-consciously one single field of persistent interaction and exchange" (pp. 17, 19). Globalisation is seen as an inevitable phenomenon that allows developments in several social sectors and technologies to provoke new forms of cultural production, consumption and social exchange. Portuguese ideas about culture and heritage, over the last eight hundred years, have shifted backwards and forwards from an emphasis on cultural transmission to one on cultural transformation and vice versa. Since heritage is a consequence of a dialectic between human activity and the environment, it is not surprising that it continues be an elusive concept. Although favourable ideological conditions since the revolution in 1974 have encouraged many studies of these concepts, in Portugal contradictory definitions have emerged. There is a broad consensus on the recognition of cinema as a means of acquiring media literacy. The problematization of cinema as an artistic expression and the promotion of interdisciplinarity between the areas of communication, cinema and education and artistic education in particular that have been established in the field of communication science teaching. In this context, the purpose of this article is to describe action-research projects that are repeated annually, when students are confronted with cinema, audiovisual language, analysis of still and moving images, the follow-up of documentary creation with students from different courses, and their involvement in the dynamization of an audiovisual space from the text of a Portuguese writer, Almada Negreiros "Manifesto Anti Dantas" or interviews in rural communities, using video cameras, within the International Project Rural 3.0 Service-Learning for Rural Development, which is an international transversal project, funded in July 2018 by E+ Knowledge Alliances, coordinated by the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, involving sixteen partners from eight European countries. ; Erasmus + Programme of the European Union, under the development of the project entitled "3.0- Service Learning for the Rural Development" | Promotor: Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

UID/SOC/04647/2019 ; Concerning the issues of gender inequality and violence,it is important not only to understand the contours of male domination (Bourdieu, 1999) but also to identify the advances, especially in contemporary societies, legal and political view in defence of the rights and principles of equity. For this, we critically resort to concepts such as honour and shame, especially in Mediterranean societies (Peristiany, 1988; Pitt-Rivers, 1988; Blok, 2001; Silva, 2003) in their various dimensions. The article by Isabel Salema published in the Portuguese Público newspaper of February 7th 2019, titled "The performance that put Ivanka Trump of vacuum cleaner in hand", had given us the motto! A group of teachers, researchers, artists and students, collaborating in the master's degree in Artistic Education at the Higher School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, chose to approach in a pedagogical way the issues of gender and domestic violence, within the scope of visual culture. Across Europe, educational institutions are essential in assisting exploration of politics, culture and history, and the use of creative arts appears crucial to supporting this aim. This article reports on Creative Connections, a multi-partner research project that facilitated exchanges for young people to explore their European identities using online art galleries and blogging technologies. Their multimodal conversations revealed an openness to consider artworks as sources of knowledge and experience. Participants did not focus on the nationality of the artist, but concentrated on the relationship that the subject matter of the work had with their own concerns.
