No technological innovation, it might be argued, has played so pervasive a role or achieved such far-reaching effects upon the modernisation of society, its bureaucracy and its politics, than that ubiquitous instrument, the telephone. The paper considers the evolving place of the telephone in the Federal political arena of Australia, notes its presence and impact in the records and, in a telephone-dominated age, reflects on the problems of the self-made telephone record as an objective ingredient of political history.
