Such efforts, he argues, were driven less by political divisions that were emerging in the colony than by larger religious and economic factors-specifically the Proprietors' hope of attracting skilled wine and silk producers, which fit their mercantilist ideas for the colony, and their desire to offer a haven for persecuted French Protestants. Van Ruymbeke literally covers a great deal of territory, and by extension historical sub-specialties, in his book, but he offers good, brief overviews of diverse subjects ranging from French Protestantism to naturalization laws in seventeenth-century England to the process of granting land in South Carolina that provide important context for understanding the immigrants' experiences.
